Plymouth Rock thread!

This is the first year that I have every own Plymouth Rocks and have the white ones. Does anyone have solid Black Plymouth Rocks? Or do they even come in solid black?

yes. Brookhaven can make them and she got hers from tigercreek. his blues have the best lacing on blues I have seen. hope my solid blue pullets will lace that well. I just got a dark blue and a black roo that are 17-18 weeks old.

let me change modes and try to put up some not great pics.

My five PPR girls are 21 weeks. They have bright red combs, and are obviously mature. Three of them have begun to squat in front of me. This started approximately one week ago. They have shown some interest in the nesting boxes, as evident by the depressions in the nests. I have yet to see one in the nest, however. Anyone remember when theirs laid?

every bird is different and every strain. hatchery birds would lay sooner than heritage. my rocks are usually the first in the pens to lay before Marans and Ameraucanas. you should get eggs soon.

Yes, their description you gave seems to suggest you're not that far away. Squat to eggs can sometimes be as much as 3 weeks. Some birds never squat. The deep red combs and wattles are a very good indicator of their maturity.

Already posted on the Plymouth Rock Breeders Thread, so ignore if you've already read it there:

Finally have some updated photos of both varieties of Rocks.

The Pencilled:

Smaller girl

Following are Fred's favourite:

The leg colour is MUCH MUCH improved. Very yellow now. Sigh of relief!!

I actually have two more girls very similar to this one that are not being free ranged. One had hurt her leg from a hawk (better now) and one was in there to teach newborns how to eat, and I just never moved her.

Boys.

Now for the Barred, who are much smaller and only a week younger:

It was raining and they were trying to keep dry. I love the barring in them, but wish they'd be more feathered out and larger at 10 weeks. The best boy I have at this age is not being free ranged.

As you can see leg colour has done a complete 180!!

Before.
