Plymouth Rock thread!

Do any of the other varieties of rocks (besides Barred) have the little signs of gender as young chicks (like the more distinct head spot and dark leg was on Barred rock pullets).  I know even with the Barred it's not 100% - just wondering if any of the other varieties have these little things that allow an educated guess?

In the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks at three weeks of age there are signs to look for to tell you the sex of the chicks.

The female chicks will have a little more of a distinct barred look in their early wing and tail feathers.

The male chicks will be a little lighter in color, slower in feathering and with the comb getting a little red is a dead giveaway.

But this also is not 100% accurate as a few weeks ago I thought I had 6 pullets and 5 cockerels. Today at 6 weeks old I can easily see that I now have 7 pullets and 4 cockerels. :)

not at hatch.....I have GSBR and I have YET to pick a pullet at hatch.....does not work with them at all. I have sold 2-3 chicks....picked the smallest head spot and ALL were roos. you will either have to wait till they feather in like SPPR OR PR or look for red combs.

Some claim to be able to sex the duck-wing(wildtype/chipmunk stripes, eye stripe/mascara) patterns (In Rocks this would be the Silver-penciled and Partridge) at hatch by the markings I don't know how accurate this is and I figure one would have to have a good bit of experiences and very trained eye to do so, its not as easy as Barring in the distinguishing. Thats about all I could give you there. Maybe you can dig up some info on the matter.

Here's a picture of the blue rooster I liked. It should get pretty large if you click on it. Any thoughts?

...He hates posing. In most of the pictures he was running away from the camera in a panic. I'll try to put up more, though.

This is the best picture I could get of my cockerel. . O and his head is bigger than a half dollar Let me know if you would like more pictures, someone might of asked for a picture from the front, but I dont rmemeber

Thank you. Last night I got on the the plymouth rock website and was looking at the picture of the LF whites. There was two pictures of two different white cockerels that had won champion, the guy I bought mine from is the owner of those two champion cockerels. I bought him thinking he was SQ, but had no idea he came from a line like that.

Well I have decided while I have the incubator fired up I will hatch as many eggs as possible off the Horstman line SPPR pullets in the month of November. I have 15 eggs I put in incubator 10/16, 17 eggs I put in incubator 10/25 and I hope to have around 20 eggs to put in incubator 11/7. My thinking is these eggs will just be backup chicks but even in my backup chicks I want plenty to cull from. :)

Very nice picture of the Blue Plymouth Rocks Black Panther and I would love to see more pictures of them. :)

Very nice White Plymouth Rock cockerel CCCCHICKENS. The White Plymouth Rocks has the Type & Size that all us breeding the other Plymouth Rock varieties are looking for. I look forward to seeing more pictures in the future. :)
