Do any of the other varieties of rocks (besides Barred) have the little signs of gender as young chicks (like the more distinct head spot and dark leg was on Barred rock pullets). I know even with the Barred it's not 100% - just wondering if any of the other varieties have these little things that allow an educated guess?
In the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks at three weeks of age there are signs to look for to tell you the sex of the chicks.
The female chicks will have a little more of a distinct barred look in their early wing and tail feathers.
The male chicks will be a little lighter in color, slower in feathering and with the comb getting a little red is a dead giveaway.
But this also is not 100% accurate as a few weeks ago I thought I had 6 pullets and 5 cockerels. Today at 6 weeks old I can easily see that I now have 7 pullets and 4 cockerels.
