Plymouth Rock thread!

Morning all....

Does anyone in our bunch raise White Rocks? I just had my first ever bout with Cocci (in my brooder pen of all places, chicks being fed medicated starter, chicks had never touched the ground)....wiped out 8 of 9 white rock chicks that were from SQ parentage. I'm trying to find some replacements

Thanks

Scott

Sorry to hear about that Scott.

I don't have any White Rocks though.

I know everyone likes pictures, so here are a few

This is one of my Blue Rock girls with the 2 blue babies she just hatched (she is being a REALLY good mama)

The next 3 shots are from a grow up pen that currently has 2 SQ parented Barred Rocks, 5 Columbian Rocks, 1 Blue Rock cockerel and 1 blue rock pullet

I am REALLY, REALLY hoping one of those 2 BRs will be a pullet, BUT, I am pretty sure they are both cockerels. They are very nicely feathered/colored compared to any other BRs I have had.

Good thing is I have 15, 4 week old BRs, from different SQ parents in the pen next to these and SURELY I will get a pullet or 2 out of that hatch.

Have a great day andstay cool!!! Only supposed to be 96F here today....

Scott,
My Barred Rocks from 2 sources ..... I ended up with 3 pullets and 12 cockerels!!!!!!!!! Oh, actually, 13 cockerels if you count the one white rock that hatched with them!

Good luck on your search for more White Rocks.

Kathy....sounds like my Columbian Rocks. Got 18 chicks (at the tune of $6 each) and have 12 definite cockerels, 5 pullets and 1 "I Don't know yet".....at least I'll have something to start a breeding program from.

Yup, $6. each!!!!!!! Thing about Barred Rocks is that they can be sexed at hatch, pretty much. That makes me feel cheated (got ONE pullet from that group)! The ones I hatched, well .... that is luck of the draw.

What are ya gonna do with all those boys? I just really do not want to grow them out and process them, because I want the room for other things. (AND, I have these stinkin' Cornish Cross chicks growing out for the freezer!

) I know it is too early to choose the best, but I think I may be sending a few of them to auction next week anyway. Think I will just keep the 2 or 3 biggest ones.

I just took a bunch of our Barred rocks to auction. Probably got 3 bucks a piece for them. I don't know. Didn't stay.

Edited to add: Make sure your keeper birds don't have split wing before you sell off the others.
