They're growing up.

I did sell 2 hens. They had a LOT of white on their chests with non-existant penciling of any kind on the chest compared to the three I kept. Those feathers were mostly white with a chunk of black on it if that makes sense. I couldn't see keeping that in the line and then wondering with each chick if it would get penciling later. These girls have defined penciling from the start. I'll get more eggs and build up instead of keeping birds I wasn't comfortable with breeding.

How old are they?Who did you get them from? They are looking mighty fine. I love their yellow legs too. I have some but much younger from Ugly Ducky and Wynette the oldest pullet is only about 6 weeks but I love her shape and I can see the penciling starting. With my Partridge Rocks it took time but now they are getting very pretty even my DH noticed the lacing showing up better before they were just those brown chickens....

My son and I have White Rocks. 6 Hens and 1 Rooster. Gonna see how these turn out.
Got a question for you experts: Did your White Rocks have a bluish-gray look to them when they hatched out? These I've got were really very deep bluish-gray especially the pullets.

They hatched May 20th, so a little over 2 months and I got them from Wynette. I think they're beautiful birds. I found another person who has them (don't think it's Ugly Ducky) and I'm waiting on eggs to become available, which could be later this fall. Where is Ugly Ducky located?

I'm still not sure what shape I'm looking for yet. The roosters toes curled due to either lack of vitamins or high incubator humidity. This was my first hatch ever and I wasn't sure exaclty what I was doing. But it doesn't seem to bother them.

Do barred rock chicks feather with barring? The one chick I have (1 week old) that we thought was a barred rock is feathering solid black, it appears ?? Would barring show up at 1 week?

Sorry, such a newbie here with the breed.

Yard full o' rocks :

Texasgal....wing feathers should be showing some signs of barring. If you can, get us a pix and post it. Even my SQ barreds who are SLOW to feather, showed barring right off

Thank you .. I took pics last nite, then forgot to bring my camera this morning .. *duh* .. I'll post when I can. Maybe chick #1 isn't a barred rock?? Those wings just look black to me..

It's definitely giving me something to do .. trying to figure out what these chicks are .. lol

Hennypen - gosh, your girls are sure looking pretty, but...that boy looks nothing like his daddy, darnit...he should have a solid black breast with no white ticking. Sigh...maybe he'll lost them as he matures?

Hennypen Ugly Ducky is in Missouri and yest it's hard to find SPRs. It's been good reading in some old poultry books how to breed both patterns that I have and I have to remind myself that the one in 10 rule applies for breeders. We have a good start though I think Wynette's birds are very nice. I have such a hard time waiting for them to get out of the "teenage" stage and wanting to cull too soon the old books say only cull for obvious faults until the first moult....that's a long wait for me
