The Columbian Rock chicks are cheeping in the incubator, they are not due until the 9th! I can hear them, though when I look I only see eggs, no pips or zips yet....

one is zipping the wrong end, luckily I opted to lay them on their sides this time instead of hatching in a modified egg carton, so hopefully it will be ok!

Here is part of our Flock of Rocks. We hatched a pair from breeder eggs, then bred the two. So all these
are full brother/sister except for original pair. Any suggestions for how to proceed/improve? We're just beginning with bantam rocks, so I am trying to train my eye.

The male you have on the right is very typey. You could mate him back to his mother. Next take one or two of the best type females you have or the ones with good type and a super comb and mate back to the cock bird.
Hatch the chicks out and try to make sure you do not get the chicks mixed up in the incubtor. You need to buy you a toe punch from a poultry supply store and put a hole in say the right foot outer web and make this pen two. Leave the other chicks with no toe punch and that will be pen one. After you do this next year we can try something else.

Are these Terry Britts bantams?

Do you still have the original pair? Glad you posted so folks can see some nice white rock bantams.

Thank you for your kind response. The bird on the right is the original cock bird, and I still have the hen also. I kept back 3 cockerels and 6 pullets, thinking to breed them back to the parent bird. We hatched out about 40 from this pair, sold off all but the nine we kept. They were "bonus" eggs from some bantam cochin eggs I bought from Dick Horstman. I didn't expect to like them so well. The chicks were all very consistent and most of them had perfect or nearly perfect combs. Do you know what lines Dick is working with?
