Just a funny little note about my Columbian Rocks- hatched Nov 9, 2010.

I have 4 chicks from 12 eggs (as some of you already know).
I believe; I have 2 roos and 2 pullets....
well yesterday I heard a funny noise from the brooding pen, one of the young cockrels is trying to learn to crow already.
His reason was they finished the food in the dish, as soon as the feeder was refilled he quieted right down to eat!

lol

Got a message from a person in Flordia who wants Barred Rock Hatching Eggs. Anyone in this region can help her? Thanks Bob

Got an phone call just five minutes ago from a fellow in Mass wanting a trio of large fowl Barred Rocks. What is it with people wanting this color pattern.

What in the world is going on with people wanting Barred Rocks Large Fowl. Has some one been promoting this color Pattern?

Just not enought breeders to supply the demand. bob

Well....adding lights to the coops has worked WONDERS. Have gone from getting 3-4 eggs a day to 8-10/day!!

I collected and set 10 eggs from my Canadian Col Rock trio last Wednesday. Hope to candle Wed of this week to see how fertility is. Just got a hatching report from WVCHICKENS who got some eggs from me in early Dec. They hatched 12 of the 14 I shipped to them, one wasn't fertile and 1 failed to hatch....not too shabby for shipped eggs, huh??

Spent the weekend reworking my brooder pens to accommodate a winter time hatch.....here are a few pix of my "adjustments", hoping to keep the little guys warm and cozy in this cold weather.

Here is a side shot of the entire brooder pen. It is 4' x 4' and approx 18" deep. I have it set up approx 30" off the ground so I don't have to bend over to get into it. The left side has a partial plexiglass cover (to allow sunlight in) and the balance is covered with plywood (less a small opening for ventilation)

Here is a close up view of the top left side

This is a shot of the interior of the LEFT side, small hole cut in back right corner to allow chicks to go from heated area to non-heated area (non-heated area is the left side)

Finally, the interior of the RIGHT side. All 4 sides are enclosed (except for the small opening to the left side). I mounted 2 closet type light fixtures (keyless, with NO pull chain) onto a 1 x 6 board and turned it sideways to mount it inside. It is approx 12" above the floor so the chicks can't touch the bulb. The fixtures are wired together and I used an eight foot, 16 guage, 16/2 replacement ext cord to wire with. In the fixture you see to the LEFT, I placed a screw-in type "dawn to dusk" photo cell. I will be placing a standard 250W bulb in this fixture. The fixture on the RIGHT will have a 250W clear brooder bulb. The "idea" is that should the bulb on the right burn out, thus causing this area to "dark" the bulb in the LEFT fixture will come on. Cost for 2 fixtures, 2 metal electrical boxes, ext cord and 1 photo cell was about $20 from Lowes.

As you might be able to see from the interior pix, the sides and top were covered in hardware cloth. I simply screwed the plywood OVER the screen so I can remove it later for Spring/Summer hatches.

I like. very good idea on the double light fixtures and the photo cell. good thinking there Scott

What size eggs do you put in the incubator? My Silver PPR's just started laying but I don't remember what size eggs those girls came from. When should I start collecting them for the incubator instead of the refrigerator?

Here's a strange one: The bottom picture is of one of the hens I sold due to poor penciling (still has that problem), but look at her comb. Those hens have much smaller combs than my girls. Why would my combs grow so much faster? (top photo my girl, bottom one was sold)

Ok......its Day 7 and I just candled all my Col Rock eggs. EVERY one (10) from the Ohio bred flock is fertile and growing well. I have 3 of 10 that I set from my birds that came from Canada that are fertile. Guess it took the 'ol boy a little while to figure things out.

I'll be setting add't eggs hopefully Sat or Sun from the Canadian pen, once I have enough collected.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

Hennypen....as for eggs size, I don't know what the "rule" is but I typically won't set an egg from a pullet until I get some that I would classify as "grade A Large".....just my opinion.

Thanks

Scott
