Plymouth Rock thread!

My flock is pretty young (by brahma standards!!) about 11 months. My fertility is not so great. I've added breeder solution to their water and they get a nice mix of food with occasional treats. Great coop & pen should be happy and mating all day!! LOL

Someone just told me to trim/cut their butt feathers. Does anyone else do that or have other solutions?

I was about to ask why you'd have to trim a Rock for fertility, then I saw you had Brahmas, LOL. I've had to resort to it with super fluffy Blue Orps on occasion, but of course, never with Rocks and not with my Brahmas.

Scott, those CRs are so pretty! The one with the darker hackles is, to me, just stunning - is that considered "too much" color in the hackles by show standards? Just curious, as I think it's magnificent! You've done just an awesome job!

Cyn, your BRs are to die for! LOVE them!

Oh - trimming butt feathers? I sure wouldn't think that would be necessary - the only breed I've heard that it's a must for is the big, fluffy English Orps. I suppose it coudn't hurt, tho.

ETA: This time of year fertility is generally not nearly as good as in spring - I bet it'll pick up for you in the spring!

OH dear please excuse my fast typing fingers and crazy brain without coffee! I meant to put this on the brahma thread! My SPPRs are so sweet but still too young to be fooling around with those crazy roosters!! LOL

Wynette, thanks

Hackle COLOR is fine. On one pullet the dark color goes all the way to the top of her head which is a "no -no". Heads should be only white. BUT, the one with the darker head seems to have better type (at least for now) so she's a keeper at the moment. Building the barn and will add a bit of "paint" next year

WOW - I'm so glad! I, too, felt like I was hoping for nothing after the rough handling they got. GLAD you got some...hope MORE come along!

Scott - that last pic taken from a bit of a distance - I always prefer to look at pics from a distance like that for type. I get much less distracted by the things like my hackle color question, and you can definitely see the good type in that last pic!!

Hey all it has been a long hot summer. I have updated my blog with pics of new Partridge babies free ranging. I was lucky to get mostly pullets. I have 6 that are leaving for a friends place which is great. Since they are my culls any ways. All my pullets so far but one(who is going to friend) has the nice dark neck feathers. I do not even remember how old these all are some where around 14 weeks I think. They are taking thier time maturing. The oldest cockeral Spike is crowing he is at least 16 weeks. I still have broodies too. They just will not stop. One hen just hatched out 3 more babies. Her pic with babies is there too in blog.

Everyones chickens are looking great.
