Plymouth Rock thread!

Speckledhen has top of the line barred rocks, and has had them for years, and she knows her stuff. If you look at other pictures of barred rocks, you will see the pattern on your boy does have barring, but it is very faint. He has some barring in his background, but it doesnt look like he is from "pure" barred rock stock.

Going to a swap to get more chickens, hmmm . . . that would be very tempting. I would probably end up getting a mixture of different birds and end up with a flock of mixed breed chickens in a year or two. I'm trying to resist buying different breeds, since I want to sell my silver-pencilled plymouth rocks in the future, I'd better stay away from swaps. I've already introduced one easter-egger to my coop and she hatched out one of her eggs, so I've started down that slippery slope (I love them both too!)

It's so tempting, especially when there is room in the coop. I've already justified in my mind that it is okay to keep 3 roosters through the winter because they will keep each other warm.

Anytime you see that extremely uneven barring with patches of almost complete white, it's a good sign that there is something else in the bloodlines of your Barred Rock. Even hatchery BRs are more evenly barred, even if their barring isn't straight. Even my BR/Ameraucana or BR/EE crosses are more evenly barred than the rooster in question. I'm 100% positive that he has something else in his line than BR.
