I understand that pointy saddles and hackle feathers on most/all breeds means Roo
But I never understand what they look like. Anybody have pics of round saddles/hackles vs pointed saddles/hackles? Prefably RIRs?

These are adult birds, and not RIR sorry, but you can see the difference in the feather types clearly.

He has the characteristic thin glossy saddle feathers and if you have a rooster they will come in looking just like this only shorter and a different color. Her feathers look the same all the way down her body until the tail and lack the gloss.

If you look at the rooster picture again. The saddle feathers are the long orangish feathers growing downwards just in front of the tail. The hackles are the long orangish feathers on the neck.

Roosters typically hold their tail feathers high.

Asils have a naturally downward pointing tail, not all breeds do. A RIR will have a tail at about a 45 degree angle hens and roosters. The roosters will get feathers that curve like sickles though, the hen's tail feathers will go straight out at whatever angle is natural.
