Poison Mushroom!!!

Well, I'm not sure what to say. If they ate it, I'd observe them. I don't know that even an avian vet would know what to do.

It goes without saying that if there are similar mushrooms in the vicinity, you may want to pick them and dispose of them.

I'm not sure if the poison is specific to humans or if other animals can be hurt by it. Some chemicals affect humans and not birds.

Do you have an avian vet you could call and talk with, if you need to?

Brahampooter -- I wouldn't worry. Most of those mushrooms are probably not poisonous. The death cap is the most highly poisonous mushroom, but as I posted, it isn't common in most of the US.

No, there aint none around here that I know of. And I dont think that theres anything that can be done about shroom poisonin. Guess I'll just watch 'em for awhile longer. Can take up to a day for signs of poisonin to show up in some cases.

I found this. Maybe you will find it helpful.

FIRST AID FOR POISONING

1. Remove the poison to prevent further ingestion.

2. Keep the bird quiet and warm.

3. Get immediate veterinary care.

4. Bring a sample of the suspected poison, any vomit, along with the most recent droppings.

If no veterinary care is immediately available, the bird is conscious, and you are sure that the poison was ingested and not just played with, the following medication can be given to coat the digestive tract and help prevent absorption of the poison.

TRY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

-Raw egg white mixed with Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol

-Activated charcoal mixed with a few drops of mineral oil and enough water to give it a pasty consistency

NOTE: These can be given (dosage for a cockatiel would be 1-2 cc (1/5 to 2/5 tsp.) slowly with a plastic eye dropper or may have to force feed with a tube.

Not usually, but they can happen once in a while. But most shrooms aint near that bad, so I wouldnt worry about most of 'em.

Oh, and GOOD LUCK!!! I'm hoping they just nibbled on it and decided it wasn't good eatin'!

My chickens and my ducks in the past have been exposed to all kinds of shrooms and toadstools. They seem to know what ones they shouldn't eat. Considering the stuff they eat and mud puddle etc. they drink out of, I don't think they're as sensitive as we are in what they digest! If I remember correctly most bad shrooms will make you sick in 24 hrs or less.

An update on that... One of my hens died the other day, the others are just fine. I think that she was the only one dumb enuff to eat it.

Last week we had a duck get really sick after eating some deathcaps. Apparently she ate a bunch because all we could find were the stems. Today I went out to the same area and found 2 more mushrooms that came up, confirming that it was deathcap. One of the local newspapers put out an article stating that deathcaps have been found in the area (Seattle, WA).

Anyhow, the duck quickly lost all coordination (few minutes), couldn't stand, head was bobbing all over the place uncontrollably. After an hour she couldn't hold up her head. We thought she was a gonner but by the next morning she was able to stand and control her head. It has been a week so far and she doesn't seems any worse for wear and is back with the rest of the flock. She mostly stopped laying for a couple of days and is back at it again. She seems better, but who knows. She may have alot of organ failure happening slowly. Ducks may be a little more immune to the toxins, and she may have just been on a magic yellow submarine ride (tripping out of her mind). We are now keeping an eye out for them, since we don't like dead birds, and want to have safe eggs.
