I just wanted to show off a few pics of my two new hens. This is Ducky and Daisy. I got them from another member of BYC who did not have enough space for them to be outside. They are not perfect specimens, but they are beautiful and so sweet! They just love to be held and pet. They are the calmest, quietest, sweetest hens I have ever met. I am totally in love! And they are really loving their adventures exploring their new yard....enjoying the grass and finally a day of sunshine.

Nice girls! I was wondering if anyone would nab those girls. I didn't, because, well, I certainly don't have the $$ laying around. As much as my Tolbunt boys need some actual Tolbunt girls, and as much as I want to expand the project. . . I don't have that kind of money.

I need to get some new pics of mine. They are getting so big! What do you use for waterers? The tolbunts that I have look like their heads are on backwards! Their topkots touch the water and get wet, which makes them droop even more into the water....they have perpetual wet heads. My GL polish are older and don't seem to have as much of a problem.

Oh come now Illia, Greenfire is currently running an auction for Tolbunt chicks and they're so reasonably priced!

The thing I don't get is, if this breed needs dedicated breeders to pull them back from the brink of extinction, which it does... why not make them more attainable for folks who are interested in them? I mean the fact alone that you could drop a ton of cash on eggs that won't hatch or chicks that will die only days later is what keeps me from joining the project.

That and lack of space...

What I find funny is that they NEVER show the parent offspring. Makes you curious, doesn't it?

But, yeah, honestly if you've got a ton of cash to dump on something with little info on the parentage, breeding, etc - Then obviously you're truly that crazy for them, which is good, or you're just a rich dude who ALSO wants to sell the offspring's kids for a ton of money. Because I'll be very honest - There are very, very few people who get Tolbunts and actually hang on to them. So many get either one male or one female or two males or something from a bunch of eggs or chicks, then just simply give up. Or they instantly hear to get some laced Polish, which is great, but what next? They sell the very first eggs they get out of that pairing. Honestly if they're in it for the love and progress of the color, they'd be keeping those eggs.

I sell my Tolbunt split eggs on and off, but only if I have no clue if the eggs I'm selling are actually such, or if they're WCB crosses. Thus, I let the buyer know - there's a 25% chance, maybe less, of them getting "Tolbunt splits." - Which are more than likely to look like Gold Laced Polish. All my Polish girls lay in the same nesting room as everyone else, so I only know who's is who if I check there regularly for the day, and lately I haven't been until the past few days. I had only one laced Polish laying, but now I've got 2, hopefully 3 really soon, so I'm officially stopping the outflow of white eggs and starting the pile-on of incubating eggs.

Oh my Good LORD!!! Seriously? That's really over the top.

ETA: I know they spend a butt load of money to import and I'm not taking anything away from their purchases, If I had that kind of money, I'd be importing stock to improve my orps quicker as well, but I think it's crazy to pay that much for chicks or eggs, regardless of how rare.

We were having a similar discussion in the lav orp thread about folks cashing in on the "craze" of certain colors and breeds but doing nothing to help improve the lines.

I don't see much difference here. Just more money involved.

Ditto. Add Sussex in there. To me Sussex really aren't all that fascinating, they aren't that different from Orps either, yet people are making a huge deal out of the new colors being imported. It's all about new colors, and $$$. Hardly anything about improvement and actually working with what you got.
