I will be the first to admit, tolbunts are an obsession, partly because nobody has any, but before I knew that, I fell in love with the colors. I only raise polish. I have one tolbunt/GL cross chick that is going to be GL, and incubating tolbunt/crele polish eggs now, with the possibility that some could be pure tolbunt. Will be a work in progress for awhile. Hopefully this winter will have project eggs to share. Will have to wait and see what the quality of birds end up being.

I was obsessed with having a tolbunt as well. I was so intrigued with the coloring and already have GL that I adore. I had hoped to get someone's cull but those are rare as well, so when I was afforded the opportunity to get two frizzle babies I drove 14 hours to pick them up. Now what? I so did not want to incubate babies and such but, as someone pointed out to me, how can I not breed them. They are from two tolbunt that came from Greenfire (I can't recall if as eggs or chicks but I think it was eggs). I guess I will see what the sexes are and then post and go from there. I could (if there is a male) put them in with the best of my GL hens and send someone the eggs for hatching or put them under a broody? The lady who bought the parents is here in FL so we may could work back and forth. We'll see.

Oh come now Illia, Greenfire is currently running an auction for Tolbunt chicks and they're so reasonably priced!

The thing I don't get is, if this breed needs dedicated breeders to pull them back from the brink of extinction, which it does... why not make them more attainable for folks who are interested in them? I mean the fact alone that you could drop a ton of cash on eggs that won't hatch or chicks that will die only days later is what keeps me from joining the project.

That and lack of space...

Oh my Good LORD!!! Seriously? That's really over the top.

ETA: I know they spend a butt load of money to import and I'm not taking anything away from their purchases, If I had that kind of money, I'd be importing stock to improve my orps quicker as well, but I think it's crazy to pay that much for chicks or eggs, regardless of how rare.

We were having a similar discussion in the lav orp thread about folks cashing in on the "craze" of certain colors and breeds but doing nothing to help improve the lines.

I don't see much difference here. Just more money involved.

Greenfire didn't import Tolbunts, their birds come from lines already here in the US. Paul Bradshaw himself confirmed that for me.

With all the attention they are getting, I wouldn't be surprised if you see Tolbunt juvie pairs for sale on Greenfire's website soon.

No, but htey have spent a TON of money to import other breeds.

With the age they sell and ship their Juvies, I'm quite sure people are going to receive dead or dying ones. I'm sorry, but Tolbunts in general are already not the strongest critters, so a trip for a 5 week old chick just isn't fair for them.

I don't mean to bash anyone, I just mean to say it like it is - Shipping chicks so young but not a day old is already dangerous, in fact I thought it was illegal? - And shipping Tolbunts is even more dangerous. Sure, not all are meek creatures, but they're known to be.

Some of you have given me a few things to think about. I hope at some point to have Tolbunts but like most here...have to wait until, what I already have can pay for them. I am still new to this and fully understand the importance of committing yourself to a project for the benefit of the breed. That was why I started breeding Lavender Orps. I am so fortunate to have a mentor to help me continue my line and teach me the genetics of improving them.
It seems like the Tolbunts...so many are raising them to make a quick buck...and that is discouraging for those who work hard to improve/save a breed.
A concern I have is 6 Crele Polish eggs I am suppose to get this month. The first of the year they where offered on auction and being new to the concept of hatching....I bid and then found that I had to wait for availability. I never received any email other than I won and would get mine in May. I tried contacting them several times and finally heard from them. Now...it is May and not heard from them as to when I should expect the eggs. Glad I did not have to pay up front when the auction was over. They where costly but I felt worth the $5 per egg. Did anyone else here buy them? I hope they are a good quality line.

They do have some trouble with dipping their heads in water. These two do really well with using chicken nipples. Maybe you could try that? My SL Polish seem to drink any water just fine, but these two definately do better with the chicken nipples.

Nice girls! I was wondering if anyone would nab those girls. I didn't, because, well, I certainly don't have the $$ laying around. As much as my Tolbunt boys need some actual Tolbunt girls, and as much as I want to expand the project. . . I don't have that kind of money.

She did work out a deal with me....she was unable to provide them with good outdoor space and wanted them to have a home where they could get out and be chickens. I added them to my flock first and foremost because I love the breed and because they needed a good home with good outdoor space. These two will be much loved pets rather than a business aquisition. If I find a good rooster I will breed them, but will likely hatch and raise the eggs myself as a personal project. I would love to further the breed....never exploit it.

At this time we are just enjoying having them around. And boy were they thrilled to get outside and play in the grass. The frizzle (Daisy) kept charging all over the place, and her sister just watch her like she was nuts.

They are pretty special. Insanely friendly. They were being kept in the house so they are really people oriented.
