another question: I've been noticing something rather disturbing to me. When the chicks are outside and playing, they will do the typical flying around and jump up to do the "claw the air" maneuver. However I've caught my little pullet Polish bending over and doing a rooster stance (head down, tail up and waiting to charge). I've never observed this in my other chickens or chicks since they are supposed to be all girls. Now the only exception to this, is my baby Jersey Giant, he is supposed to be a roo and he doesn't do the "rooster stance" but the "claw the air" attack.

Does the play action indicate that they got it wrong at the hatchery or is it just a preference to the chick which one to do?

My chicks will play like roosters before laying/breeding no matter the gender. . . . In fact the girls do it more frequently and for a longer time than the boys.

My polish BL bantams play like that and I think that it is so funny. They bend over facing give each other the evil eye for a few moments and they jump up and challenge each other. They do this for a few times then run around and case each other. I have seen similar behavior in other breeds as well usually at six to ten weeks of age. Gender has nothing do with this, it is normal play activity at a early age.

im going to say the roo is about 27 oz and the hens about 20 oz about the same size of the d'uccle bantams. i put them on byc a few weeks ago to see what others thought they were, most poeple said polish cross, but they could be pyncheons. the one hen has a poofy crest and the other hen and roo has more of a spike crest. im not really shore what they are. i really hope they start to lay soon so i can hatch out some peeps. if you want me to i can get some better pics of them so you can get a better look at them. thanks for the compliment on there color.

Ah. I'm sorry to say though then I'm sure not any of those are purebred. The white legs, huge single comb, and small crests on the females are all giveaways, plus that you got them at a Poultry Sale. No offense meant to your or your birds, just mean to warn you incase you hoped they were. A lot of people go to swaps or sales with "project" birds. They are very pretty though and I'd love to see some progress!

You could either work them towards a true Tolbunt or to a new color, such as Buff Columbian.

none was taken i know they aren't purebreds. with all everything you all have been saying im going to work on them and try and get true tobunt i would like to get a new color as well which ever comes first and then i will try to get the other one then. thans for the compliments. i took no offense to any think you said.

Milliefleur, Size is also similar to my Pyncheons so quite likely that is what you have instead of Polish. I found them to be poor starters with only ~ 50% survival from flight from hatchery while they arrived & were fed at less than 2 days of age. Then the survivors were small & hard to start so ended up losing still more. So after several shipments, still lost most of them. At 1 yr,my 2 hens layed but eggs never hatched when under broody cochin hen. Rooster definately was active but eggs never lived to hatch. Also there is/was a breeder on east coast so you may see some pynchies around that area....I just love the bright milliefleur coloration as was trying to find a breed that color after the disasters I had trying to get milliefleur d'uccles.Of those none survived thru summer due to some disease or problem they arrived with...I shall try to figure out how to post a pic of mine for you to compare...And search pyncheon thread on this site for pics also.

Milliefleur, I also forgot to mention there is no size comparison to my white crested black Polish bantam hen's crest size and the Pyncheon crest size. The Polish crest is couple inches larger in the same age of bird. Also check out Pyncheon pics on Feathersite.

I just can't get over our Polish pullet and cockeral, they weren't handled much when we got them just over a week ago however with daily handling they have already gotten so friendly. The pullet will run right over to us, the cockeral isn't quite ready to do that yet but he has no objections to being picked up now. So today my daughters and I decided to try our first "photo shoot" with them since we didn't have any good photos of them yet. Here are a couple of the better ones.. Please excuse the fact they are dirty we don't want to start trying to bathe them until they are doing much better with handling don't want to ruin all the hard work the girls are putting in.

So what do you think of our pair?

The girls plan to show them in 4H they are fighting over who gets to show Lace... they both like her better. They are also thinking they may want to venture into APA shows but I know nothing about those.

beautiful polish i like the silver lacing on them. i try to handle my peeps and full size bantams daily but i only ever have a few become friendly. most don't want nothing to do with me even at feeding time. handle them very carefully still not that friendly what do you do to make them turn friendly like that?
