I have two polish. 1 Rooster, and 1 Hen. I love polish. Defineltly going to have to get some more. Only thing that bugs me about them is they get such big crests they cant see where there going. The other night, since I have soo many chickens I don't even bother counting them at night anymore, my WCB Polish Hen slept outside in the snow. The next morning she was froze. Not dead, just has snow froze onto her back. So that same day after I got home from school I went to the coop, got a pair of scissors, and gave her a little haircut. She still looks like a polish just less crest on the sides, but she can see none the less. She went inside the coop last night because she could actually find her way there.

I read that Polish's aren't winter hardy. My rooster is the hardiest bird I have, out of about 70. He doesn't care about rain or snow. He just keeps right on going. He's a real trooper.! I love him.

People say a lot of things about Polish. Things like they're not winter hardy, they don't do well in free range environments, and that they're dumb.

Truth is, I've lost 2 Polish into the woods out here, and we live right next to a National Park - Lost em for 2 weeks, and they were alive and healthy when I found them again. There's no mistaking that I got someone else's chicken!

The dumb part is usually that Polish cannot see if not put in a proper environment and taken care of, plus some hatchery birds are indeed skittish. That's not being dumb.

Then, the cold hardy part. . . I have a frizzle cockerel who's withstood 20 degree weather, a horribly insulated coop, frost building up on his feathers, plenty snow, and a LOT of rain! He's still alive and healthy. Plus my girls have also slept out in frosty cold nights before, too. They were alive and kicking after that.

scbatz33 - How old is he? He looks either really young or like he has a really small crest. Where'd you get him from? Lucinda? He's cute!

I wanted to post a reply about polish being cold hardy birds. I have had polish for many years and I've had good birds and bad birds. It could be bad breeding,I really don't know. I've had birds that just could not handle the cold and yet the birds that I have now are extremely cold hardy. I cull birds that are not. I also free range my spare roosters. They can be flighty but I have my birds for enjoyment and eye candy. I don't want to sit and hold them.

I have 2 types 3 hens that are totally flighty but that is because they were hatched out in wild under free range hen and then I have ones I hatched out my self been in a coop and runs all their live and they are very friendly and don't spaze out when i get in their pen to collect eggs or feed.

My polish are the friendliest birds I have besides my big ol' Bertha hen that has been around the block a few times

they are also weather hardy for our area. We dip down to single digits and the windchill gets below zero every now and then - still have happy birds in the morning! My frizzle rooster will even try to sit out on the perches to go to sleep rather than going inside! Crazy bird, I always put him back in unless it's warm enough, but darn if he doesn't try no matter the weather! I worry his tootsies'd be frozen to the perch the next morning when it's this cold!

Polish aren't dumb. honery maybe, but not dumb. I had a Splash hen who would escape out of the coop and run every day, free range and then put herself back at night. She would wander all over the place. Unfortunately I think she became lunch, one day she didn't come back. I tried and tried to plug every possible escape route but she wouldn't be contained!

I've had some from hatcheries that were a bit skittish, but most were freindly enough.

The roo is aprox 9 mo old. I got him from a gal here in KY. He is from Green Acres.

How are your Polish roosters (temperaments) compared to other roosters you have? We only have 6 large breed hens now, are new to chickens this year, but have ordered 4 polish hen day-old chicks to be shipped from My Pet Chicken for Easter this year. In case one is a rooster, I was thinking of trying to keep him. Let me know about your Polish Rooster... I do have 5 children ages 5 and under---so am worried about an agressive rooster being around right now.

All of my Polish Roos have been very nice. My Tolbunt is the biggest baby and falls asleep if you carry him or hold him for long periods of time. They are protective of their girls, but have never been aggressive towards me or my family.

That being said, the temperament of hatchery roos and breeder roos are different, just like they are with any chick. I would say, handle them often and get them used to people, in the hopes that they will be nice.
