Thanks...how much to they crow, are they really loud, are they "nice" to "the girls? I know you can only speak for yours. And yes, we do put quite a bit of time into "playing" with the chickens. She reads to them (has made her a top reader in her class! Who knew chickens could be good for grades, too) and even has them up to the house from time to time!

I appreciate your knowledge!

The crowing goes by each individual roo. First thing in the morning is a given, then usually they let off one here and there during the day. My bantams crow with a slightly higher pitch, the LF is a little lower but still sounds higher pitched than a normal LF dual purpose bird. They all are very friendly with the hens and look out for them. Mating habits vary, my tolbunt will jump on his girls and grab a beakful of her crest feathers to hold on, so you may notice some missing crest feathers missing from the back of their heads. My white crested black bantam is a trip, he just slowly walks up behind his girls and puts one foot on their backs and kind of walks up on them to mate. If that one runs out from under him he does it to the next closest one, very gentlemanly like. He gets the job done though, I've got fertiles from him going in the incubator right now. With crested breeds, keep an eye on them for mites and lice. Check every bird about once a week. I've found them on just a single bird in a pen of 10, and they can suck the life right out of them. If you notice mites, treat everyone in the pen, paying special attention to the infested ones.
