I appreciate the information that you have provided. This is my first try with the blues, and I'm learning. My other Polish are WC black, buff laced, and gold laced, so no crossing colors there.
I certainly agree that Polish aren't for the casual backyarder who doesn't want to spend a lot of time in grooming. They're charming birds and well worth the effort to maintain them, but it is effort!

cmsdvm,
Thanks for ALL the i info you have shared on thos thread. I really appreciate it & have gleaned lots. The blue, black genetic issue especially helpful as I got a blue sent along with my WCB so was curious as to what to do with it if I were to breed..... Anyway I have asked on multiple threads about winter housing & breed "hardiness" . A couple days ago you mentioned the breed was suseptible to chilling. Could you please explain "CHILLING" as I have just a few standard Polish pets & am trying to learn about the best way to get them thru cold northern winter.
Thankyou !

Polish are super cold hardy EXCEPT when they get those big fluffy crests wet, then the whole bird is chilled and respiratory problems and eye problems ensue. You have to check eyes in your Polish regularly-make sure they aren't being irritated by the feathers- possible give them a haircut in front if they are not being actively shown. My Polish have a covered run for rainy days, and are only allowed to go out on grass when the weather report is good. Regular chicken waterers will also wet crests, staining them and chilling the bird. Pop bottle waterers keep them dry and comfortable. Cutler's pheasant supply carries them, or I get mine direct from the manufacturer.

I like the screw-on type of pop bottle waterers, and Pepsi product bottles hold them tighter than Coke product bottles. I've also had pretty good success with regular Mason jar chick waterers by cutting an opening through the wire and fastening the jar on the outside so that only a small portion of the base is inside the coop.

I'm very excited because my eggs finished hatching today and now I have four darling babies

Looks like I have a black, a white crested khaki and a white crested blue

What is your guess on the sexes cmsdvm. Looking at the photos on your website I would say the black is a girl and the other two boys?
Here are some pictures of the little darlings~ The striped chick is a blue laced red Wyandotte from my flock. The Polish are from shipped eggs.

Cute new babies!

If you breed your Khaki and your Blue offspring together you should end up with some Platinum offspring.

I don't know. See how high the crest line is above the eye. My girls come right down to the eye. It is hard to tell from pictures- but they all look boyish to me. UGH- Do not deliberately produce platinum! It messes all the colors up. Breed for one of the many accepted varieties, please.
