For everyone into genetics and breeding check out polish breeders club they have such good info on genetics and how to use black chickens for getting other colors to come out and tips for polish like mixing mite meds with Vaseline and putting dabs on ur polish since they are prone to mites
rubberbanding and cutting their poofs
All sorts of helpfull tips breeding blues that has been so helpfull for me
Just passing along some info.

I don't have Polish but do have fluffy poofy Silkies and until a couple months ago had a couple Leghorns. I once made the mistake of using vaseline on my White Leghorn's comb/wattles/legs for mite and frostbite maintenance. The vaseline stuck greasy to the Leghorn's feathers both on her head and her stomach (from the greasy legs when she roosted) that dirt adhered and badly stained her snowy white feathers when dust-bathing - she looked permanently filthy until her next moult. I never used vaseline (or olive oil) again!

My vet recommended Vitamin E oil instead ($4 at Walmart in vitamin section) - not only is the vitamin a beneficial nutrient for any skin on the chicken but it absorbs overnight if applied at roost time. With Silkies I sure didn't need greasy vaseline on their poofy feathers and the vit E oil can be applied to legs, feathered toes, beak, toenails, comb, wattles for dry skin or mite or frost maintenance. After treating with vit E oil on my chickens my own hands are so soft and not greasy like vaseline residue would leave. If applied at roost time the vit E totally absorbs into their legs/toes etc overnight without staining the feathers like vaseline or olive oil does. Of course gently pat any excess off before putting the chicken back on its roost.

Oh man. So, my Spike, my male polish, keeps getting himself into trouble. He almost got eaten one day, then got lost when he tried to run away. We couldn't find him for a long time! Finally found him and snuggled him real tight! he's a sweetie! Then a few days later I couldn't find him again, and he was floating in the duck water :( he was alive, but suffering from hypothermia. After over an hour, I finally got him warmed up. Poor thing can't see, and that's his trouble! I gave him a haircut, but it isn't good enough. I need to cut it more!

Interesting idea. Do you know if the Vit E works as well as the Vaseline to actually prevent frost bite? (I don't have the poofy breeds any longer, but I know what you mean about the white feathers stained & dirty.) We had some nasty -40'F nights out here last winter, so everybody got Vaseline not just our roo. They haven't gone through a molt et & still look dirty.

Poor guy! Definitely give him a good haircut. My new buff laced roo couldn't see at all either. To the point that he was really timid and spooky and couldn't find the food bowl. Gave him a really shirt haircut and his whole personality has changed.
