Political Ads????

Google ads are the price we pay to have access to this wonderful site. I am sure these ads are geographically targeted and ads for all sorts of political issues may appear before the elections. Google also has limits on the types of ads allowed. Just a hint for those in favor or opposition to any given google ad, the advertiser pays based on whether you click or not and Backyard Chickens gets paid if you do click. So get clickin' for the chicken.

I get very few adds, I use firefox and you get lots fewer junk with that. Also, there are also 'add-ons' to FireFox that you can use like NoScript, which further cuts down on adds. it's a bit of a pain because when going to a new page I have to choose which (if any) Java scripts to allow, but I got used to it pretty quick and now when I'm on other people's computers I'm amazed at the junk they have to deal with. Even without the NoScrip add on, FireFox is much less annoying. Here's what my BYC home page looks like... there are some adds down at the bottom of the home page, they're always from BYCs advertizers though, not Google, Yahoo, or places like that, and I still get the small ones on the top of the forum pages, I approved them because they are adds for things I am likely to be interested in looking into, I approved them for these pages.

Right now on the top of this forum page is an add about "J.M. Hatchery 'Freedom Rangers'" and at the bottom of this page is an add for "Raising Chickens For Dummies"! And when I see one I like, I click on them and look things over too!

A quick online advertising 101:

A vast amount of the ads on the interwebs, and many of the ads throughout BYC, are served through Google's AdSense program. This program is great for websites that provide services for free, especially websites that are huge and cost thousands of $$ a month to run.

Google's advertising program (and these days most others) show dynamic ads to different people at different times based a ton of variables, including the contents of the website and page you are on, time of day you are visiting, etc. So, you may be seeing an ad that nobody else on BYC has seen.

Note: We do not choose the ads which are shown on much of BYC. We try to work with Google to have them filter inappropriate ads, but we're often left with what they give us. Sometimes our requests for removal of ads works and sometimes it doesn't. If anybody has Larry, Sergey, or Eric's email please let me know and I'll gladly give them a call direct!

Nifty,

Thanks for the 101 lesson. Money being the necessary evil that it is, I can understand. Guess the content just took me aback, especially after seeing them 24/7 on TV! Gets to the point I don't even want to bother to vote come time, as I am sick to death of them all by then. Sorry to jump the gun, and glad it's Google doing the nasty ads, and not you guys! Started questioning my sanity when no one else could see it!

At least if they wanted to fit in here, they could've thrown in the old quote, "a chicken in every pot!"

I get an ebay.ca ad on the top line, and I just surfed back to BYC from there, so where you have been in the past does seem to count.

Yes, Eggbeaters! Don't know how true the follow thing is, I've never eaten an "eggbeater" in my life! Nor will I !

I'm guessing that Google didn't give a rat's patoot, the ad is still there as of this morning
