Political Ramblings

I think that will keep a lot of people from seeking any mental health treatment. What about people that already have guns and want to see a psychiatrist ? Will the Government come and take away their guns.
I also don't think I should have to give up one right to exercise another right. Does having a gun mean the Government can come in to my house at anytime to see if I have it's stored right ? Is that another right (the need for a warrant to search my house) I have to give up ?
Someone posted a chart today that shows that mass shootings are not going up. I don't know why you keep saying they are. Do you have some study that shows they are ?

The CDC estimates that over 30,000 people will die from the flu in this country this year. Flu shots would reduce that by about 80%. That's 24,000 people, how many will die from guns ?

Checking mental backgrounds wouldn't work, then? Safety inspections wouldn't be acceptable?

I would give up if I were you thaiturkey. As one contributor so rightly said, you will never convince certain people to take the opposing view, no matter how compelling the evidence. For many the ownership of a gun is a safety issue. They don't see the tragedy of living in a society where it is necessary to own a lethal weapon merely to feel safe. Others use a gun to intimidate, because it is intimidating to boast that you carry a concealed weapon. This to me is a statement to frighten others not to cross your path. In our society the lives of children are more important than the rights of an individual to own something that is neither use not ornament. Clearly it is different in the US.

Flu shots only work for the strain they are designed for. Unfortunately we have no more control over what flu virus we get than we do over someone with no history of violence being prevented from shooting up a school. Doesn't say much for vaccines or their gun equivalent... gun laws.

Bingo! the picture is always brighter when looking inward than it is looking outward. People with no EXPERIENCE in the American gun culture have a hard time having empathy for gun owners. Societies like the UK have been very successful at isolating the violent people in geographic areas of their society by social engineering means and then monitor them which is easy when those people do not have equal rights.

To take an opposing veiw would devalue the right. Owning a gun is a right not a privelage and it does people good to distinguish the difference. Rights need protecting whether someone exercises them or not.

You're probably right, newfoundland.

The most disturbing thing about this debate here and on CNN is the apparent lack of compassion amongst the no-law brigade for those young children and their families. It's very sad that people live in such a hardened and insensitive culture and don't seem to want it to change. There's been much written about the right to carry guns but nothing about the right of people to go about their lives free from the fear of being caught up in a shooting incident.

Perhaps the change towards something we take for granted is too much to expect.

Worth repeating

Well I can see you don't have a concept of a Constitution that gives you rights that even the Government cant take away. You come from a culture that you only have the rights the Government lets you have for as long as the Government says you can have them.

You didn't answer my question of, how many of my rights do I have to give up to exercise another right guaranteed to me in the Constitution ?

Anyone using a gun to intimidate anyone can and will be arrested.

The flu shots for this year is for 3 strains of flu. It's a proven fact that flu shots save lives, the number of people that die that got flu shots is almost zero.

Most people that die of the flu have immunity issues. A healthy person can almost always recover from the flu which by virtue of having the flu your body builds immunity.
