Politics in schools?

i agree, devils advocate is a good position to play as a teacher. They shouldn't be interjecting their personal beliefs. But theorys of politics should DEFINITELY be taught. I think it would create a more open, thoughtful adult. It sounds like that teacher was WAY outta line.

We always talked about it in school. It was a great opportunity to learn about the election process and see it in action. I think it is important for kids to talk about elections and politics as long as it is always informative and fair with no name calling etc... towards candidates. I also think it is imperative that the teacher remains neutral and acts as a moderator for discussion. Mom's Folly has the right idea and I agree completely

I will not elaborate too far but it is alot more complicated than that. His church was a liberation theology church. I will not say what liberation theology is about due to friction it could cause on the site but it is easy to google.

Stll. Why should it matter about color or religion? Its more about debates and things like that. This person will be running america. Not your church.

Like I say I will not elaborate on it much but the info is there for anyone wanting to research it.

I agree that the teacher was out of line. First of all, do all the kids even know what she meant?? That was ignorance on her part. I am not sure she should be fired over it, but someone needs to tell her to put her foot in her mouth.

I think that it's important for school age young adults to learn about debate in a controlled manner, with the teacher serving to moderate and challenge them to think rationally.

I think it disturbs a lot of parents that perhaps teachers may be pushing one political view, or another. But what I find to be the case about 100% of the time:

1) The parents have never even bothered to speak a word to the teacher, so their imaginations often run wild.

2) It's not like any bias is going to stick with a young adult. They're all forming their own opinions from their teens through their 20's.

p.s. regarding the antichrist, since you weren't there, was the comment flippant? was he/she quoting someone else? was he/she being devil's advocate (pardon the pun). Refer to rule #1 above.

religion matters in whatever you do,no matter if people think so or not it is going to be a big factor in everyday decisions..most people dont even realize that, and it doesnt matter what religion you are, it does factor in.

BLAMMO!!! You hit the nail on the head. So what if he WAS Muslim. There are some crazy muslim dudes out there. True. There are some crazy black guys out there, too. There's a bunch of crazy christians, too. It's about the person... WHO they are.. not WHAT they are.

Regardless of who we think should be elected president, it is wrong to tell children that Obama is the anti-Christ. Frightening children with Nostradamus predictions is just wrong. Man, if I had to explain the apocolypse to one of my children because some teacher didn't like Obama, I'd be pretty bent. I think I'd have a talk with the principal.

Personally... I'm not so sensitive over what teachers sometimes can say. If it's habitual, then yeah, it's a problem. But many people are heated/worried/angry and so on about politics at this time, so if it's a one time thing, it could have easily slipped out in a spurt of the moment. How many of us accidentally slipped out something that maybe you didn't mean to say. A teacher is another human being. I mean, as adults, I'm sure there are things that have been said that children might not have needed to hear.

I dunno. Maybe I am bias. I have discussions with teachers, am not afraid to contradict them, argue with them, or disagree.

If anything, talk with the teacher first if it's that big of a deal. They are important people, and even important people mess up some times.

Oh...and we-a-be-a watchin' this thread now....

But why? I mean its more about the debates like taxes, oil and healthcare. Why does the media talk about his religion but not mccains or palins? My moms b/f siad to me "If obama gets in he will give all our jobs ot the africna americans. He will only do tax cuts for the african americans." He is brainswashed by the media.

If I was a teacher in middle school or high school. I would have the student tell me who they would vote for and why.
