A good teacher, even at elementary levels, will find many a "teachable moment" with election questions. If a teacher is asked a direct question, they should answer it, but they don't need to elaborate on it. I can think of many things that can be taught through talking about the election.

history of enfranchising or disenfranchising voters
the evolution of voting rights from property owning white men to all citizens regardless of race or gender

what is advertizing and how it works

The misinformation people are talking about is probably not teacher driven, but kid to kid talk.
