poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

I am in Portland Oregon, we can have up to 3 hen's no roos. I am legal now with my 3 girls, but about to go illegal. I want more chickens, and have eggs incubating...Wouldn't mind having up to 7. I actually think I can get a permit for more, but until someone complains why bother. My yard is surrounded by a large 9ft privacy hedge on 3 sides, and the neighbor behind me knows we keep chickens, she doesn't have a problem, and when the time comes she will have fresh eggs. I am a bit more at ease reading here about other illegals. Enjoy those chickens.

I too am in Portland, OR. I am neither yet but will be an 'illegal' this spring. I am going to get ducks but can't decide between 2 breeds.....runners and black Swedish....so I am going to get 3 of each. My hubby says 3 total of any kind of duck; I'll tell him they messed up my order....lol. He'll never know.

I don't have any yet, but when I do they will be legal. They're illegal in my city right now, but I am part of a group trying to get the bylaw changed, and will be one of the pilot project sites allowed under a clause in our bylaw which states that you can keep poultry with permission from the city manager. We are working at getting the pilot project set up for spring 2010 - I can hardly wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to have a roo to complete my girls here in Portland, but dont think I can swing it w/o it being a huge hassle. I guess I'll just have to settle for the hen's, sure is better then nothing...I know I can squeeze a few more girls in w/o anyone even noticing. LoreenH, good luck with your ducks. It's always nice to run into someone else on here from PDX.

Hi, I'm in Portland, Oregon suburbs, and we are legal. There are no specifics here regarding numbers of chickens you may have, etc., but there are codes regarding sanitation, noise, etc. that could be applied to chickens. We have purchased sexed chicks only, but have had to rehome one rooster so far, and think we may have one more who is still in the closet. My husband and I have heard someone crowing in the coop or tractor once, and he heard one more crow. We think we know who it is, but want to make certain before we rehome a bird. Not all of our birds are at POL yet, so there is room for a little doubt. We could probably get away with having a rooster where we are now, but just feel it might be uncomfortable for some of our nice neighbors, and we don't want to offend anyone.

My mom and I have about 70 birds on a half acre. She lives inside of the city limits, where it is illegal to raise livestock. Code enforcement came to make us get rid of our birds. The city ran into one problem. My moms owns TWO PIECES of property, which the front property has the house and zoned residential and the back half has one permanent coop (old steer barn) and I built a second coop on sleds ( which makes it portable and not a building just like a dog house). The back half is zoned agricultural and and cannot be changed without property owners request, new construction of residence on such property, or court ordered for the purpose of making a new road or such. City code enforcement tried to fine her and make us get rid of our birds. Problem for them is the law was on our side. There are about 5 properties still zoned agricultural within the city limits. You can hear our roosters all morning and they have not been able to do anything to us to this point. Its been 3 years now and they keep a close eye on her. She put a sign up to sell eggs and they told her it was illegal because she did not have a business license and the front property is not zoned commercial.

chickens make me happy, therefor i can own chickens- erifutable logic. i live in the sticks anyway, no one cares. they kinda wondered what happened to the ten cornish crosses i had been tractoring across my front lawn though...

I'm in a small New Jersey town and I am considered an outlaw. I live in a semi-attached home in a pretty densely populated area. My neighbors love my chickens and have my back.

Here's the rub... I also serve on the town's zoning board for two years now. If I get caught, I have some explaining to do!
