Do you go on vacation? (In a Non-COVID world)

Yes. In the past we drove the dog four hours to Ohio to stay with the in-laws. Sadly the dog passed just a few weeks ago. Then the neighbor Kid (age 14) came to feed the four cats and 17 chickens. We didn’t have an adequate sized coop nor a run. Now we have a much larger coop and when the weather thaws, we are adding on a run so if there are delays with locking up the birds, I at least won’t have to worry so much. Vacations almost cause me more stress than just staying home. I worry about my animals so much!! The last vacation we took the in-laws actually stayed at our house for a week and during that time a coyote got one of our sweet hens in the middle of the day and they didn’t even know because they struggled to count them all :(

I am sorry about your hen.

We used to take vacations! Then the kids grew up & moved out. Now we have chickens & ducks, rabbits, a mess of dogs and 2 gardens. It's just busy Spring thru Fall and I probably couldn't pay anyone enough $$ to slog around in snow & sub freezing temps twice or more daily during Winter so... We stay home. Take a day trip here and there instead.

We got our chickens in june, so I'm also curious about how people take care of their poultry when on vacation. We used to have a dog, but that was never a problem because we had like 5 different neighbours who loved her and were willing to take care of her while we were away. (She hated other dogs, so we had to keep her at our house and people would come over, feed her, let her out, and refill her water.) We might be able to get a neighbour to chicken-sit, but that's not a definite yes.

I go on vacation (and have in the last year too). If I am gone but my kids are home, it's easy because they just take care of all the animals. If I take them with me, I hire someone to stay at the house and take care of everyone. Most recently it was a friend's 18 year old daughter but I have had different people over the years. When my kids were little I had a nanny and usually she'd stay in the house if we went on vacation. If we're only gone a couple of days, I may ask a neighbor to come a few times a day but generally I prefer someone to stay because the dogs get lonely without people and with as early as everyone's day starts, it's just better to have someone here. My dogs won't let them oversleep and miss sun-up. LOL!!!

I'd say that twice in 20+ years probably counts as a "no".

We can't afford to travel, but we do take occasional weekends. The one time we did take the younger kids camping for a week one of the adult kids was still at home and go drafted to take care of the flock.

She wasn't brave enough to face the ferocious broody though and that's how we had a surprise chick.
