I think it would be really cool to do a BYC wide poll to learn more about what types of flocks people have big, small, city, country, age, use, duration, breeding etc etc etc

A whole chicken don't cost but 2-3$ these days @ the grocer

The store chickens lived a unnatural life crowded indoors
By Me
The cheapest on sale store CX chickens are .69 a lb
the organic CX raised indoor is $3.50 a LB

At the farmers markets by me:
a pasture (50 in a 8x12 chicken tractor) raised Non GMO chicken is $4 a lb
an organic pasture raised heritage , I only found one time, was $9 a lb

my organic heritage birds dress out 3.5 to 5.5 Lbs .. if I bought from the farmers market they would be $30 to 50 and they get to be chickens.. just have 1 bad day.

My eldest two chickens (The Hamburg Sisters) are 21 weeks this week, and the youngest six are 14 weeks this weekend. That would be the BR, SS, Leghorn, Buckeye, EE and GLW.

My oldest is my bantam Cochin. Never laid much but is a great mama.

The other larger breeds get processed out when laying slows at around 4 years old.

Forgot to add the Cochin is about 7 or 8. I lose track lol.

Our original flock is 4.5 years old. We have lost a few, but the rest are still going strong and laying eggs (except the rooster, of course!). Our youngest are almost 5 weeks old (2 silver laced wyandottes and 2 welsummers). Our broody australorp, Bertha, adopted them for us.

I'm surprised to hear someone has a chicken 12 years or older! I'd love to know their feed choices and care procedures.
