I hate the ankle and no show cause my feet are so big they do NOT go the ankle lol they always fall off my feet. But long looks weird with shorts but I’ve done it before. I like the little crew ones that go just above the shoe/ankle lol

Seriously, I would recommend ankle socks. Your friend will get the benefit of the foot protection of the socks, without the shoe eating the socks and they really don't show that much. If you think your friend would rather something that shows less, let them roll the top down. If the shoe eats the sock it will do no good as far as protecting the feet, which is really what socks are for.
