I wish my dog was scared of my birds! He’s a cocker spaniel golden retriever mix so he has a massive prey drive. I’ve lost four chicks to him.

I know how the spaniels are! My girl used to really want to kill the chicks, now it’s like, “Avoid, avoid, avoid! That crazy poofy thing is chasing me again!”

I raised Cocker Spaniels and showed them many years ago. None of them had the least interest in birds. Maybe dogs from show breeding wouldn't be after chickens either.

I have a wonderful little blue Ameraucana named Pom, and she is the sweetest little chick ever! She’ll perch on my shoulder and stay there for long walks around the house/yard, she’s ok with being pet and whenever I walk into their room and take the cover off of the brooder, she flys up to greet me! And she has never had the intention of hurting anything. Until now.

My dog Piper is a bird hunting spaniel, so having chicks in the house is driving her crazy! Whenever I go down she follows, whenever they go outside she’s right there. In a single day I probably say “no!” To her at least 10 times. At least.

Well this morning, I had two chicks out on the floor with me and of course there was Piper, sitting in the doorway watching. She knows she’s not allowed to get them, but that doesn’t stop her from whining. After I put them back in, Pom comes flying right back out so I figured, “why not?” I had her on the floor on my lap when suddenly she spots Piper. Head goes down, back arches a bit, wings go to the side... suddenly she’s off! A 3 week old bird chasing a dog 50 times the size of her! Chasing with all of her might! I have NEVER seen my dog more terrified (aside from the time she accidentally got sprayed with a hose!) She ran so fast away from the tiny little bird flapping along after her!

I wish I had photos/videos but my Phone was upstairs and it was over just as fast as it began! I was laughing so hard!!!

Dogs and chickens are funny.

I had something like this happen once but it was my little female calico cat chasing off the neighbor's full grown Rottweiler, and boy was she hacked off. I've never seen a dog move that fast! And yes, I laughed until it hurt.

Your dog is beautiful, btw, and looks very sweet tempered.

One word of warning-- don't trust that it would happen the same way twice. That dog could easily have turned around and little Pom might've been no more. Birding dogs are very tough to break of the habit which they're bred for and I know this because I once had a G Retriever and chickens. Bad, bad combo. Don't let your guard down.
