Pomeranian Goose Breed Thread

Pics
^she was just on a pond my family farm. I brought her back home I'll definitely look into some vitamins or anything else. She can stand up but can't walk. I'll put her in a pool when I get home from work. She's caged up right now with feed and water next to her. I think she will be ok she's just hurting. I plan on finding a mate for the drake so he can leave the geese alone. He was the only duck on the pond and finally was around something other than Canadian geese. Thank you so much for your help.
I hope she will be okay in a few days. I'd suggest at least 3-4 ducks for your drake those boys can really lay it on one duck and you may end up with another one like your Pom. it always good to have at least 2-4 females to one drake. Keep us updated please

Will do. Thanks!

RowJimmy, I only own ducks and have never had geese, but I read something in a backyard waterfowl book that might apply to your situation. The authors said that waterfowl can experience something like a nervous breakdown where they can't move and even use their wings to get around because they can't walk. The hysteria comes on when they get overwhelmed by a dangerous situation, even when they aren't too physically wounded. For example, one owner kept finding a dead or dying duck every morning with no visible wounds. One morning she got up early and discovered that the neighbor dogs were ganging up and harassing the ducks through the fence every morning until one collapsed from hysteria and wasn't fun to worry anymore. Anyway, from what I remember (just returned that book to the library, darn!), the authors recommended keeping the duck or goose in a darkened, quiet and safe place without any disturbance to give them a chance to recuperate.

My gozzies are three weeks old now. Sorry, I know that pictures are half the fun of forum chat threads; someday soon I will upload a pic to a post for the first time in my life! Since the weather has become milder, I moved them full-time into our chicken tractor. It's 5x8, but with five goslings in it constantly the poop load is a little heavy for my husband and his lawn to handle

. They sure are cute.

I tried vent sexing them last week and to my delight I found one definite male! I thought, I'm for sure doing this wrong if I can only find five females in this group. I'm sure there are more males. The one gosling I sexed as female is huge, the biggest of the bunch. I would be surprised if Hunkamunka doesn't turn out to be a boy. Their names are Hunkamunka, Sebastian, PeeWee, Pinky and Purpley. Guess which ones my three-year-old named?

These goslings were cheaper than any I've seen before, so I got them to raise for holiday feasts for my family. When local crossbreeds are selling for $15 a gosling, and these poms were $5 each, I'll take them all!! Love that grassfed meaty goodness. Anyway, my question: are Pomeranians so rare that, should any of these gozzies grow up to actually meet the SOP, I ought to keep/sell them as breeders, or just go ahead and eat them all? I'm halfway hoping they all grow up with bright orange beaks/feet so I don't have to make that decision. I kind of gave my word to a certain someone that we would definitely be butchering all five of these geese, and no, none of them would be overwintering in our backyard somewhere

.

Also, some of the bigger ones look to be developing a lobe already. Is this normal/to be expected, or am I seeing things?

You know, I was thinking the same thing. She or he I honestly don't know what it is yet, but it does seem a little shell shocked. I feel so bad for it. It literally stays on the ground all day and doesn't make a peep. It only make a noise when I walk up to it's pen. I'll put it in the baby pool for 30 minutes or so at a time and it just can't do anything. It tries to stand and just falls over when I take her out. She does use her wings to turn herself around though. I put some scratch and a water bowl next to her at all times. She doesn't even seem like the same goose after the whole ordeal I think you're right. While I can't blame the duck, it's nature it does worry me but I think we'll be ok. Thank you though!

I hope scratch isn't all she is getting, that is not a complete balanced diet. Grass for grazing and complete feed to round it out. If you want her back up and on her feet and healthy.

Well I put her on grass yesterday and she didn't want to eat any of it. Any idea on how to make her eat grass?
You can't force them but they are picky about the kind of grasses they like and what is safe too, they like soft grass like perennial rye and it shouldn't be longer than 3" to keep it from compacting in their crop for lack of a better word.try cutting some up and putting it into her water bucket.

I used to entice Cas to eat grass by acting like I'm a goose eating it too. I'd pull at it with my fingers and make excited noise. Might sound silly, but maybe your goose will be more interested if she thinks you are. They always seem to want what we have! Lol

Great advice from both of yall. I will try both. Now if it something mental should I leave her by herself or should I bring her back around the other two geese? The duck was the aggressive one. My brown and white Chinese never showed any aggression towards my Pom and they are virtually inseperable. Maybe seeing them walk around will inspire her?
