poo on fuzzy butts!!

ok i have a bunch of fuzzy butts with rockhard poo stuck on their vent area....theyre only 4 days old and i dont want them to get wet and sick.....i tried soaking one butt in warm water n not only didnt it work but i freaked cuz i think they could get sick if wet....also one i tried to pull off the poo n accidentally ripped out some fuzzyness....i feel horrible.....so help! ne ideas??

huh,wierd,usually warm water helps loosen it up a bit,you could use toothpicks,but thats wen its not that bad....hmm,how long did you put them in the water to loosen it up?and wen you do,you can usually blow dry them or get them dry with a towel.and how warm was the water?maybe you put it just a tad too cool or something...hope i can help you

What about cooking oil, canola or olive etc, rub it around in a circle on the poo til it loosens, then smoosh down their feathers where the poo was stuck before so it wont stick again. If you were giving them sugar water or some water additive, stop now, they are started enough by 4 days. Also dont give any treats, only chick starter at this point.

To remove it, you can hold the babies bottom under a weak stream of warm water - but be careful just pulling it off. You can bring some of their insides with with. The babies won't get sick it if is just tehir fanny that is wet and you dry them thoroughly afterwards.

i just check my day old chicks and they had the same thing. i just picked it off and had no probelms. is this called pasty butt?

also...any ideas for the redness on the booties....i dont wanna put anything on it that will hurt them...i put a little vaseline on them and then notice them picking at themselves so: i washed butts, then let them rest then put vaseline on then rinsed the majority of it off that way theres just enough to keep it soft, but not so much they can eat it....if that makes any sense at all

That same thing happened to some of mine couple weeks ago and I did hold bums under warm water and a soft tooth brush but mostly used my fingers to work it loose under water..dried the chicks and they are thriving now couple weeks later..did not lose any.
