. Trish, I absolutely love your whole 5 pages of PDZ info! I do have one teeny, tiny question: please compare PDZ to DE that I have been using in wet spots. I want to switch to granular PDA because of the powder-in-lungs issue. Will I be happy with PDZ? Both are the same price here, 40# for $14 and granular or powder. Chime in all, please? We are in the cold country where poo does freeze, but this is ok if the amonia remains in the pitched out chunks. Thank you all.

Was just wondering where you found your source for powdered PDZ. We're here in the Bemidji area and I had to drive to Fargo to get the granules but would like to try some powdered for under the roost but would like to try some powdered to mix with the shavings on the floor. Thanks.

Reading all these pages I decided to try the sweet pdz but couldn't find it locally so I found zeolite through Azure Standard. It's granular and it's grey, all the pics here it looked white or off white?
Any thoughts on this- is it the same stuff??

Hello again, Erlbrd! I was cruising here in my favorite thread and found that you may have tried the zeolite from Azure Standard. I have a shipment of some things coming in a couple of weeks from Azure so I checked it out and they are still carrying the zeolite...."BRZ". Did you ever end up trying this out? It is a little cheaper than Sweet PDZ but could not figure out the consistency.

This could certainly be my answer if the product works for poop boards. Thanks for your input.

Erlibird PM's me back and said that the Azure Standard stuff is working great. Just do a search for it on Azure as zeolite. It's BRZ or Bear River Zeolite and their website address for poultry specifications is:

Sounds like it's safe as they even recommend it in the diet in small percentages. I just read through it all and it sounds like they are making a scientific appeal to the big commercial business of meat and laying birds so I'm sure their data would be accurate.

Anyway, I ordered some today from Azure Standard. It's gray but does the same job, apparently. I'm still going to keep my eyes open for a source for the powdered form,though, as this is like the PDZ granular and bsides the poop board, I'd like some to mix into the shavings as well.

And GOOD NEWS!!

DH says he will build me the poop boards....now that he's convinced that in the long run it's going to save us a ton of the shavings I dump in the compost cleaning up after the poop-gang.

And....it's cheaper than PDZ at Azure, pound for pound.

We are almost done with our A frame coop and the girls will be 5 weeks old on Wednesday. I'm ready to get them out of my house and into their coop! We designed the perch over a removable poop box and we are going to use PDZ and DE with a kitty box sifter. We also placed another removable box next to the nesting boxes for ease of cleaning. We are using "Homer" buckets from Home D. with the backs cut partially out so we can gather eggs. Homer will be the only male in the coop, LOL. No crowing for our neighborhood!

Thanks to this thread, I learned about food grade DE and PDZ! Thanks fellow chicken lovers/owners!

Thanks to this thread I knew to make two roosting bars, and use PDZ under them. It's so easy to maintain. I have a tip- I use one of the metal mesh strainer/sifter and a scoop. Scoop PDZ into the strainer, and sift. So easy, and almost mess free. I also make sure to recover the roosts with the powder, and haven't had any poo stick yet.

One question I have reguarding perches / roosts. If using 2x4's should they be layed to where the birds stand on the 4 inch side or would they prefer to wrap their feet around the 2 inch side? Or does it depend on the type of hens? I will have rhode island reds, barred rocks, and other breeds similar to these. This is my first coop so any and all input is great.

Thank you trish for the thread.. I am going to rebuild my roosts in the layer coop next weekend and work toward my breeding pens...
I have smell issues, big time cause I have an old leaky barn and when it rains, the shavings in the pens get wet.
Hopfully PDZ will help...

jackhorn01--for large fowl lay the 2x4 on the 4 side flat, in the winter they can cover the feet entirely to keep warm, and the heavier breeds need the extra inches to help prevent breast sores. One of my black orpingtons came with one that been just terrible to get it healed, 4 months later she still has it--it's getting smaller .
