I'm living in an apartment at the moment yes but this is the last month. My fiance and I are closing on a house right now, we actually go to sign the papers in a few days!

We will have everything moved in by October first but it'll take some time to get settled. So no chickies until closer to spring.

One of my cat's is pretty well socialized and incredibly mellow. His best friend was a small bunny rabbit for a while. My youngest cat though is pretty adventurous and gutsy. They're strictly indoor cats though so they wont really get to play with the chickens once they are older. While they're growing in the house I've already planned on securing them in the spare room and locking the cats out. I trust my older kitty a lot, but he's never been tempted by tasty little birdies before, and the less stress on the chicks the better.

I'm actually planning on composting so I'm hoping it wont be too much of a chore in the morning to quickly rake out the run.
Congratulations on the purchase of your home! It's a wonderful feeling to have a home of your own. And you can do so much more......like keep chickens. You are so smart to plan ahead now. There are such good ideas here. How many chickens are you planning to have?

So do they not poop in the shavings anymore?
Neat idea!

Hello CBS. Not sure who you were addressing here but here goes. The majority of the poop falls under the roost so the poop board/box catches them. The PDZ neutalizes the ammonina and therefore also the odor. They go outside at their first opportunity and spend most of their time outside. I spot clean where they poop in the shavings as they have about 2 periods during the day that they decide to come in. The run gets a sifting in the morning before I let the girls out. My shavings stay clean. It is some bending...just whenever I happen to go out, I'll put on a rubber glove and grab the plastic coffee container. I'm sure the old timers would think I'm foo-foo nutsy, but I enjoy the clean coop.

Thanks for clarifying.
I'm trying to decide how I can add something like this to my coop. It sounds like a great system.

Thank you!

We are planning on somewhere between 3-5 so it wont feel so overwhelming at first.

Hi everyone, I'm one of Spoiled Chicken's (Trish's) earliest PDZ converts from this thread. Her use of PDZ on the poop board has really taken off, and helped so many (myself included) that I scooted over to her profile and gave her an "ovation". This is exactly why the powers that be at BYC created them...so acknowledge great idea's etc.

Just wanted to share, in case you wanted to do the same. :)

Here's the link to the Ovations, and how to do it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/699980/announcing-the-new-byc-reputation-system-ovations

Hi All. I finally found a source for Sweet PDZ in my area. They do not stock it but can order it in for me, Before I order what is the consensus, Powder or Granular ? I know this has been discussed earlier in the thread, but I cant seem to find where. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
