Do you mean left in the poop board?

You need a pretty fine mesh, but some poop specks will end up back in the board.
I use less than a half inch of sand/PDZ and have to add every couple weeks as some gets kicked off board and sticks to poops, so it all gets fairly well refreshed IMO. 
It's a balance.

I took @aart's advice when we were having issues sifting our PDZ. We found this letter tray at Wal-Mart. Works perfect.

I'd guess that the easiest fix would be to put wire or netting on the bottom of those collar ties to discourage/prevent them from roosting up there.

This evening i went out i have 6 hens, 1 bird was on the table, 2 in rafters and one bird swinging on an electric cord looking very upset.i watched from outside the window watching my buff orp try to get up in the eve's. I swear had i let it go on someone would break their neck.

I ended up rerunning the wires against the wall so no more loops for swinging. Then i took an old shower curtain and stapled it accross the eves. I planned to use wire but after watching my buff bounce off the walls i got the impression their eyesite isnt too good. I figured they could see the eves through the wire and continue to bounce off, possibly injuring themselves.

Anyhow.i hope this is the fix. I swear when you think your done with the coop the chickens show you more flaws.

I've been told that if there's any possible way they are going to roost on the highest point possible.

I'd put chicken wire all across the bottom of rafters, a 'ceiling' so to speak......then open up your eaves for ventilation is possible

I know exactly what you are dealing with. After building our coop/ chicken HOTEL, trying to make it so safe for my 6 girls they all fight for the highest place in the coop to roost. I lost a couple of hens several times in the top eaves of the coop. I made sure all of the screws from the metal roof were gowned flush so they would not cut themselves.

I decided to just let them roost where ever they want. My coop will hold 10 to 12 hens I am told, so they have plenty of room to find their favorite place to roost.

Not the best pic, but my flock has a ton of roost space, all at the same height. They all choose to roost in a big bunch, with some on the roost, and the others on the poop board below. Idiots, I swear.
