Wow- I am definitely going to try that stuff -PDZ- it says it is ok for compost on their site.

Thespoiledchicken, what is on the coop floor? Shavings that you still clean out periodically?

BTW, your coop looks awesome! Looks like coop heaven.

Awesome suggestion....I am new to raising laying hens. I just started building my coop as a project for me & my kids. We are definitely going to alter our final plans & incorporate this! We are expecting our chicks next week & are very excited.
Thanks for the great idea!!!!

Congrats on the chicks! Building a coop and taking care of chickens is such a great project to do with the kids. My boys love it and all their friends want to come over and collect eggs, makes them very popular

Good luck with your coop and enjoy those chickies (watch out for chicken math

I have shavings on the floor

I hate cleaning the shavings and I hate deep litter method. I would love to convert to sand but that is not working out the best in my other coop (smells and dusty). I still may convert and just deal with it. Do you do sand?

Actually my coop has a dirt floor with shavings... My run is straw. I compost fhe shavings and straw. I just try to keep it reasonably clean. I am designing another coop now though And I am def. going to do some kind of droppings board under the roosts! Thanks for sharing!!

I'm just getting ready to move my girls into the new coop. I don't have poop boards and my question is.... can I put this stuff on the floor of the whole coop? It's only 5.5' by 4'.

I don't see why not. If it's small enough you can totally do it, just make sure you put it deep enough so you can scoop it. My coop is to big, it would cost a lot. My local farm store charges 17.00 for a 40# bag of it. Let us know how it goes! Good Luck!!!

I LOVE IT!!!

I used to raise and show Guinea Pigs (Think Rabbit Shows) and kept my most prized show pigs in the unused formal dining room. We sprinkled the Sweet PDZ in the bottom of the cages under shaveings. No one ever knew they were there unless they opened the fridge, Lol the guinea pigs knew where their carrots came from. That is amazing stuff, and ultra SAFE as GP are very sensitive. Have to admit I never thought to use it in the coops. I'm sooo pumped to have found BYC !!!

Trish, finding this thread is like hitting the lottery for "an about to be" chicken owner!

I am starting to convert an 8x8 section of my barn to a chicken coop this weekend. We will be introducing 11 hens and a rooster to our family in a few weeks and the timing couldn't be more perfect!

We moved out to the country last summer and I have been waiting for this spring with great anticipation and little patience
