Not a bit of poo lasts in my backyard once I let Chopper out...it's like a smorgasborg for him....ewwwww needless to say, I don't let him kiss me, I don't care how cute he is.
DH would be out there hosing off the porch before the poop hardly dried, sometimes 4x a day. I would hose once a day after they were back in their yard. Anyway, once the chicken projects are done for the winter, I will be enclosing the back porch with shade cloth including a 'screen' door. Will make the south facing porch nice and cool, and the chickens can have the front porch, which faces due north anyway for cooling off. (Folks that know us come in through the garage since there is no walkway to the front porch. Even the UPS man) Once thing about living in the country, things are much more relaxed. When we were in town I would have given you a "stink eye" had you come tapping, tapping at my kitchen door.
I find mulch the best way to control the poop. I put hay in the chicken yard, around the plants, under chicken wire to protect the gardens and shrubs, basically anywhere the girls poop. When I have weeds, I just put the pulled weeds up over bare spots in the "lawn" (mowed pasture) Starting doing that about a year ago, and it really does improve the grasses. At this rate I may get some top soil back before we live here a decade.
I like the idea of selling the buckets of chicken coop gleanings. Hmmmm, wonder if there will be a market for that here? Will check that out.
This summer I tended to go outside a lot in my bare feet (yes - country girl at heart) - and even in the chicken coop - just watched where i walked. if i did get some poop on my feet - i say "eww" and wipe it off... lol
my then-3year old went out once like mommy - stepped on a big ol poop and cried "MOMMY I STEPPED ON POOP!!!" You would have thought it was C4 or something - but she did start wearing her shoes from that point forward - which I would rather cause her lil feet dont have years of use and abuse like mine - mine are tough as nails... lol
This is the biggest reason for me to not free range my birds (when they get here). I'm not a germ-a-phobic, but I really can't bear the thought of my kids playing in the yard when there's chicken poop everywhere! I think I'd rather do the extra work and build a huge run, and "bring" as much free range to them as I can! Plus, I have this nightmarish vision of 220 lbs of bullmastiffs running towards me AFTER they've rolled in it.
My dogs eat the poop for me. Kinda gross, but I don't have to clean it up in the yard and the dogs are kept happy with something to search for. Everyone wins. Yay for poo-eating dogs.....of course, its a whole other ballgame when the poo they find is from a homeless person, but water ya gonna do? Ew.
