Poopy butt on our hen!

Our sweet little hen, Rebecca, has had poopy butt for a while, I didn’t think much of it until i watched her poop (I know that sounds odd, but, you know..) she has so much poop on her butt that you can’t even see! We tried cleaning it with a toothbrush once, but it came right back. Not sure what to do. Will it effect her health? Or does it just look bad?

Clean it with lukewarm running water and a little dish soap. (Yeah, hold your chicken's butt under the lukewarm running water.) Dry afterwards and trim feathers.

Trimming the feathers won’t hurt her???

Trim the excess feathers that are catching droppings, and wash her vent area well. Then take another picture. This time of year flies can lay maggot larvae on droppings which can lead to flystrike, a deadly condition. Also, it would be good to see her vent, since there could have been a prolapsed vent.

No worries, had to do that with mom her chicken too. Chicken feels nothing of it when you will trim butt feathers

Trimming the feathers won’t hurt her???

Shouldn't hurt her at all as long as you don't poke the chicken with the scissors. Feathers are like fingernails or hair. The chicken may not like being trimmed, but it won't hurt her.

It doesn’t matter if you trim or not, but it would be good to see the vent area cleaned up to make sure the hen doesn’t have something dangerous going on. Were you able to get a picture of her cleaned up? Prolapses happen in the coop, and other chickens may peck at it, so we just wanted to make sure that she is alright. I have trimmed excess feathers on a few hens who had poop continually getting on feathers and vent. They don’t like me doing anything to them, even holding them still, but I just grab them, do what needs to be done, and it is over.

I will get a pic, sometimes the other chickens would peck at it but not often because they all pick on her sides and back and that is apparently more interesting.
