poorly chicken

Yes like stated above it could be ascites below the vent will be watery and puffy. Take a 16 gauge needle and stick her two inches under vent two inches to side. Water will drain if it doesn't flow use syringe. Also is her comb blueish or flopped more than usual?

Her comb is flopped to one side, but it has been like that for the two weeks i have had her, however it seemed pale earlier compared to now. It also seems cold at times.

Strange that sounds like anemia. She may have several things going on. Have you checked her for mites? They do more damage than people think. Did you feel her for a water balloon feeling abdomen? I wish I could see her so I could help.

I have checked her for mites, and have been unable to find any. Her abdomen is quite balloon like....what could that mean? she is still hanging on in there and im constantly giving her drops of water from a syringe, which she happily takes. However she is only eating a small amount. she is still unable to stand and seems to flop head forward. Her feet seemed really cool to the touch this morning...is this a sign of anything? I hope shes going to be ok, for now however, i have a disabled chicken and its so sad. I have placed her on a warm water bottle. I did notice today that both legs have a really tight grip. Its so moving when she grasps my fingers. Thank you for your response. I am constantly obsessed with checking to see if anybody has responded or given me a new lead x

sorry to say that mavis passed away tonight, thanks everyone for all your help she was such a
sweet hen.

Yes her abdomen feels swollen. Thank you so much for your advice. i cant believe the hours of internet info i have read about ill chickens and never once did i come across ascites....i am frantically googling right now and will prob be spending another crazy night watching my poorly little hen and hoping for the very best. she does seem to be making more movement in the last couple of hours. she is trying to walk but her wings are still really droopy. however she has wolfed down some oregano and pecked a little at her corn and seed. i really do hope there is something that i can do. crazy at it seems im all consumed at the moment with making her well again. i refuse to have her euthanised whilst she is still eating and drinking as past experience with birds (of the garden variety) tells me that if a bird that is going to die it has no interest in food drink or company.
I am the same way. If one of mine is still eating/drinking and seems to have the will to live I will try everything I know of to help. Sorry to hear that you lost her but at least you know that you did all could to try to help her and probably picked up some good info on the way.

I am so very sorry that Mavis did not make it....I know you are heartbroken, you did all that anyone could have done to help her get over whatever it was that she was suffering from.....she had a wonderful life with you.

Thank you for your kind words. This site has helped me so much. God Bless my little Mavis she showed personality and determination right til the very end, even grasping my finger as she died. She was a special hen and i will never forget her x she is missed so much. It has been a long week of sleepless nights and worry. I feel relieved that at last now she is at peace. Im taking her to beautiful spot near sherwood forest (Robin Hoods forest) where she will be buried x R.I.P Mavis (aka Parsnip) x
