Poppy's Crop and the Broccoli Stem: No More Broccoli Stems for Chooks!

Good question!

From the look on the vet's face, I'd say it was a record weight for her practice, anyway!

I put her antibiotic cream on this am and notices she she has a split in the top layer of her crop skin a few inches below the incision -- I decided just to put ointment on it and keep watch rather than head back to the vet.

My first thought was that the mouse tried to escape..

But seriously, her crop skin was probably so stretched from crop stasis that it is going to have weak spots for a while..

I am thinking of trying to put those peri strips on it -- that will allow air in but help the split heal back together.. and I a just hoping she doesn't develop any more splits..

We essentially recycle veggie, fruit, and pasta salads we give to our few rescue parrots each morning - we take it from the parrots in the afternoon and the chickens love their leftovers!

*we tell them we made it just for them.. ssshhhhhh*

The parrots like things sized so they can hold them in their feet while eating.. but we can mince the stems....and again, I am amazed at my stttoooopidity.. just didn't think of that! Great suggestion, thanks!! *sometimes I wonder how I successfully manage walking across the street unescorted...I was not gifted with much common sense..! geessh!*

I am glad poppy is ok. I fed my chickens broccoli the other day, I noticed one of my hens had green poop, I thought no big deal it’s the broccoli. Then I noticed the next morning she was panting, she started laying down and her neck started twisting. I scooped her up called a vet. But they are not aviary vets, so I massaged her crop and gave her water with AVC. She seemed fine but she started getting lethargic and passed away tonight. Idk what to do with her. I live in the mountains, I am afraid if I bury her something will dig her up.
All my other chickens seem fine
