Porcelain Silkie Thread

Porcelain coloring is Mille Fluer with the lav gene or Mottled Buff or Red Columbian with the Lav gene. You are missing two essential genes for it to be porcelain, Columbian and Mottled.

very true... i have porcelain OEGB, and it kind of bugs me when people use that name for isabel silkies... but silkie people see it fit i guess... oh well... same thing goes with serama people calling both chocolate and fawn/dun seramas "cocoapop"... chocolate and dun are totally different genes... it's just going to confuse the rest of the people out there... amirite...?

oh well...

carry on...

Yeah, it is a bit confusing especially for newbies. Same with Lavender vs self blue. Hopefully we cal all agree on a new name soon. The same thing I am sure will happen that happened with Lavenders. We could not get them approved as Lavender since the color was already establish in other breeds as Self Blue, so now they are self blues. With porcelain, there are true poircelains out there, so we will need to come up with a name that represents what we are working on which (at this point at least) IS different because there is no mottling gene. Pastel is one of the names thrown out there but there is pastel in call ducks which to me is a bit different too. I personally like Isabel, or Self Cream since it is a mic of self blue and diluted buff (at least in my birds). I am sure it will be a while until everyone agrees, and they the APA might have a different idea anyway!

I want an opinion on this bird. He has the barest hint of buff on his upper wings, some in his hackles and a tiny bit of buff on his chest. Would you consider him a porcelain. He is a Bobbi Porto chick that was sent to a friend of mine.

Ummm, one essential gene: mottled. They have columbian, or at least many/most of them do.

None of hers do.

i breed self blue OEGB... some self blues will have some sort of a splash to them... like a soft feather canary vs solid feather... i usually pair up darker self blue to a lighter self blue so i can make both colors 50/50... it doesn't make sense to me, i don't know what allele it is or the difference... but i know the offspring don't come out darker than some or lighter than some... they either come out solid self blue or like a splash looking self blue...

weird...

anyways... that's probably what's going on in that picture... a mottled looking self blue with a small amount of brown...
