So you don't screw it in much more than that? Wow. Yeah, we screwed ours on the bucket all the way in (but they dont have to rest on wire) and then some. I probably overdid it

Got the food and water all set last night although I didn't put her in yet. I really need to stop putting it off aha she shows no signs of quitting. I tried to put her on the roost tonight, twice, but she went back to the nest both times. I did replace the layer pellets in the picture with Flock Raiser crumbles, which I went and bought today. I figured since she's not laying I shouldn't feed her them? I had the whole flock on it this winter so she's used to it and they all did fine.

Anyway I found the perfect pieces of wood to plop it on today (though they're only maybe an inch high, which I don't know is high enough?) and was finally going to say enough is enough and break her tonight but I just checked the weather and it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and Friday and possible thunderstorms so I'm going to hold off. I might do it Friday, by Friday evening/night, the rain is supposed to let up. And then Saturday and Sunday are nice so if I time it right, and if she's cooperative, it should be the perfect time to break her before the rain starts back up Monday. Unless you think it's okay to break her in the rain? I have a tarp over where she'll be and I can put some along the sides of the run too to prevent side blowing rain from hitting her. I was just also hoping to be able to let her free range a little each day to help her forget about it faster, which I can't do in the rain. That's not necessary though. But it's supposed to be A LOT of rain. If it was just little sprinkles I would break her in it anyway aha but the rain is another reason I'm not sure the wood is high enough but we can also use bricks or cinder blocks.

Bricks would be better to raise crate, IMO, 4 at the corners.

Are the HN's usually that low?
I try to keep them at head height,
but if that's what she's used to, it should be fine.

I'd also use a smaller feed bowl, or just put less in it, enough for 24 hrs.
Maybe ziptie that in place too,
if they get agitated (or even if not) it'll get stepped on and dumped.

It's too bad you don't have a place to put the crate within the flock,
and under weather proof cover,
it may well take longer than a few days to break her.

Did you put her on the roost well after dark?
They are more likely to stay where you put them then...
....and easier to handle when they are what I call 'Dark Dumb'.
Have been rotating all my adults a few at at time to the coop partition for assessment in the last week or so....one day I did it before it was fully dark, chicken rodeo!!
Last night I waited until full deep dark and it went much smoother.

I feed flock raiser year round, and oyster shell.

Unless you moved her when it was completely dark then she will go back to the nest. Even if she did stay she'd be back there at first light anyway.

It's likely going to take more than 2 days to break her. It took 3 days for my last one, and she had only been sitting for 2 days. Yours has been at it a lot longer.

You can try to let her have some free range time, but most likely she'll take a dust bath, scratch a little and run back into the coop again.

I'm guessing your coop is too small for the cage?

Kdogg, I never had a broody buff Orpington until now. I think it's your fault. :plbb

She was thrown in the broody jail yesterday. I had to remove the white Cochin, who thankfully didn't return to the nest, but there was still room for the BLR Wyandotte in there, who kept stealing the ducks eggs. I have to wait to put the welsummer in there. My broody jail is a busy place. Mine contains a bantam rooster who keeps the girls from setting.

Hopefully yours is going well.

Okay, I'll use the bricks then. I was wondering if I should.

They're not usually that low, on the bucket they are up on a cinder block and one of those half ones, though they've buried it (I've attached pics), but I couldn't get the bottle to stay in place up higher :/

I'll also fill the bowl less, thanks.

The coop itself isn't big enough but I was thinking of putting her in a corner of the run? I'll attach a picture of a possible place too. It looks terrible from the rain, I think I might add something to it today.

And yeah, I went out at like 10 at night haha but we also keep the porch light on to deter predators so it wasn't really fully dark I guess. Maybe I should turn it off? Surely they can't get that good of a sleep? But I'm just paranoid after the attempted raccoon attack a few months ago

Really? And they do fine? I might try that! I especially like the high protein. Although I do like the new feed I recently switched to, poulin grain.

It was well after sunset, at like 10, but like I just mentioned above, we keep the porch light on and i had turned the other one on to see so it wasn't really fully dark.

So should I keep her locked up for a few days? Or should I let her out once a day?

Yeah, it's probably been almost a few weeks, how long do you think it'll take?

Yeah, the coop itself is too small but I might put it in tbe corner of the run.

LOL sorry! :p

Wow you have a lot of broodies!!

I haven't started breaking her yet

You could probably stick a piece of wood thru the corner of crate to support bottom of waterer.

I personally would recommend that bowl of feed be outside the cage so she can stick her head out through the bars to eat. The minute you put her in there she's going to be mad and will most likely start pacing and will knock the bowl over.
