Possible lymphoid leucosis neoplastic tumor + Update: Not injury. Confirmed to be a tumor

I thought I would do an update on Tootsie's leg tumor. I'd stopped all treatment months ago, and it's gotten larger. However, it doesn't seem to be bothering him more than it ever has. And it hasn't affected his appetite or his interest in the hens. It seems like he's had this for much longer than the actual three years it's been since I discovered it. At age eight years, he appears to be living out a full life span in spite of the tumor.

New development. The tumor has mushroomed. Literally. It's growing outward with grape-shaped nodules. The leg is also thickening, probably from the cancer invading the leg bone. But the really concerning development is a very bad odor like carrion (a dead thing).

I'm not sure what to do. I sprayed some Betadine on the back center where I'm pretty sure the rotten smell originates. Probably the dead cells are trapped in the crater and I really need to debride. But I hate to cause him the pain it will entail.

Debridement is the only way. I'm so sorry for him and you. Are you giving him something for the pain? Cancer in a bone is excruciating.

His pain level, while obvious there is pain, still is not curtailing his social interactions with the hens and me. He's still eating, and when the hens try to co-opt something Toots considers a favorite, he hammers the hen with his beak. So much for being a chivalrous paragon of rooster generosity. If he reaches the point where the pain is consuming, I will end it.

I mixed up a soak with Lysol and then scrubbed the black crater in the center of the tumor vigorously. Tootsie didn't flinch, so it must not have hurt much. After it was all done, the thing still smelled. So I guess it's the tumor that stinks.

He's not ready to be euthanized yet, still eating and socializing with the hens, though not mating them. We'll see how long this can go on before it's time to end it.
