So we decided to leave him out. He deployed and retracted without issue tonight, and he even had sex with Mouse. It was in when we went out, and it was in when we said goodnight to them a good hour later. Fingers crossed!

We agree. The stress of being separated is not to be underestimated, yet at the same time, sometimes it is necessary.

@3bird, happy to hear the phallus retracted back inside itself.

If the phallus prolapses again, goals should be focused on keeping the tissue clean, and moist; honey, sugar paste, KY jelly, or an antibacterial ointment are all great at achieving that. In the case that doesn't work, see your vet, and they may have to tuck the phallus back inside and place simple interrupted bilateral equidistant sutures on the cloaca to prevent phallus prolapse, but allow defecation. I have done the latter processes with a few birds and it has worked quite well.

Just an update that Angus made it through the cold snap just fine, and he is doing well. We'll see what happens when it warms up again and rains! Here are the ducks and Angus (make sure to see the craziness that happens around 0:35):

We just realized that the Gallery, which is the space we usually set-up for off-season duck hospital (because the Gallery is closed January through late June) is also now the grow room for spring seeds. I'm not sure how angus is going to like the 16 hours of full spectrum lighting.

Glad to find this thread! Poor Cap- we thought he was a "she" until curly little drake feathers came in. We've had similar weather issues as @3bird, but since they sleep inside I'm not worried about injury. What IS weird is that Downey, my original drake, and Cap, have a very..... interesting relationship. I figured they are just establishing who is the alpha and tried not to judge. Lol. Tonight, just to be SURE, I finally flipped Cap over. Not only does the poor boy have a tiny penis, but it's bright red and seemed to be sticking out. I made sure it was clean and put some ointment on it. He's also molting, so I'm going to try to leave the poor man alone until tomorrow. You can't see it from a distance and I only noticed it when they were in the bath, maybe he was just excited?
Hopefully it will go down by tomorrow.
I felt his tummy, then flipped Downey over to compare how their tummies felt (no odd lumps, etc). Aside from being very offended, everything was fine, except Downey is nowhere near as red. Maybe Cap wants to be a girl? Does that even happen? *facepalm*
