Hi all,

I have a 1 week old Barn yard mix chick bought as a hatching egg under my broody hen. All these chicks I got except 1 are random mixes, but I was wondering if the pattern method can still work even in cross breeds?

It has a cream band all the way down it's back and the darker beige lines either side. I saw this similar patterning (different colour though) in my previous chicks which were sex-linked Legbars so we knew they were female (well, hoped with confidence).

I can't find too much information about it outside of this website: https://layinghens.hendrix-genetics.com/en/articles/color_sexing-in-day_old_chicks/
This also shows this image near the top as being a female due to genetics. This is very similar in colour and the width of the band, so just wondering if this could still apply in a BYM or if this is just another complete guess since the genetics are thrown!

Nope, that method only works on chicks that are specifically bred for it, sorry. At six to eight weeks you can usually tell gender. :)
Fab, thanks for the info, I thought this might be the case, but you can never tell, especially in these BYM - I love it but torture myself for weeks guessing :D
