We found a baby bird last night. It was being stalked by cats and we couldn’t find its parents so we brought it in. We think it’s a quail, but confirmation would be nice. Can anyone guess what breed it is? Are they able to eat chicken food? If not, what can they eat? I fed it egg yolks (from chicken eggs) last night because I know that should be good for it. If there’s any tips for keeping quail you think would be important, please share!

they need to eat a high protein game bird feed. if you don't have any, you can give it chicken starter for a few days, but that's not as good. if you only have one, I would get it some friends.

Thank you for the food tip. It is only the one chick. We’re gonna get it friends, but I’ve heard that quail are really mean to other quail if they aren’t the same type ):

That is a quail, but it could be a couple different species. I would contact your local wildlife rescue because if it's a wild species, it's actually illegal to keep. No matter what species it is, quail are social and need the company of other quail as well.

Quail need higher protein than chickens, so chicken feed is not great for it. You can add boiled, crushed egg yolk to the feed to boost the protein.

Planning on it (contacting wildlife rescue)! We are gonna get friends for it as soon as possible.

Thank you for the tip on food!!

I'm not sold that that's a Japanese quail, so x2 on the wildlife rescue. It might just be me, but it looks like the wrong shape to be a domestic coturnix chick.

Either way, gamebird feed is your best bet while you figure out what this baby is and what to do with them!

Got it

I have an extrodinary friend who raised a lone quail to be part of his animal gang. Amazing guy who has dogs that love the company of all other beings - the quail slept with the dogs, cats, etc. and would take its turn with all the other beasts in the household to get treats, etc, from the owners' hand. He (Woodstock) lived for 5 years in their home.

Me - I would keep it - maybe buy a bantam chick to provide company. I had a mountain quail I raised in a LARGE bird cage who SANG to me all the time. Caruso was awesome. But he also had the company of a few other quail with him while the winter weather raged outside.
