Possible Quail Pattern Silkie... *UPDATE** Options Wanted.

Hello BYC!

Sonoran Silkies has suggested that a silkie that we hatched may be in a quail pattern. We only raise silkies and are quite unfamiliar with this pattern.

~ This little boy/girl is between three and four months old.

~ Is is an overall light cream color with dark wing tips, dark tail feathers and peppering throughout the whole body.

~ I just noticed this morning that it has a few wing feathers that are a bit more golden.

~ The father is a lavender (Self Blue) silkie rooster. I think that this is why it is a cream color instead of a buff color.

~ The mother is not pinpointed at this moment. We have black, and lavender silkie hens.

We are separating each of our likely hens to figure out where this little buggar came from.

I have no idea on the color, as I stick to blue/black/splash but just thought I'd drop in and say CUTE little guy/girl!

If Dad was pure Lavender and Mom was pure black, wouldn't she have been black/split to lavender?

I am by no means an expert when it comes to chicken color genetics (though i know some things), but to me it looks more like some Columbian pattern?

I think she/he doesn't have a typical Columbian dark ring around it's neck.

Other than that it does have some similarities.

One would think that it should be BLACK... this is why I am so stumped at what it is!

We look at it daily and sing the 'which one of these doesn't belong' song. It is so adorable in a large sea (flock) of lavender silkies!

FUNNY!

Nope no other roosters for miles!

Our little guy must have gotten into another coop of silkies and that egg must have been mistakenly incubated. We are thinning our flock so those types of things just can't happen. That being said... I hope we get one more before that happens.

We may just be seeing the wonder of nature at it's finest! That's my bet and I hope we see it again... our little guy/gal needs a friend!

There are a lot of genes, and combinations can cause an offspring to display a pattern that was not present in either parent. My reason for saying it looked quail is that the breast appears to be distinctly lighter than the back. Quail feathers do display a pattern, but as with other silkie patterns, the feathers are simply not cohesive enough to readily discern the pattern. Quail is definitely not a pattern I am intimately familiar with, so I could well be wrong. And if it is quail, it is a silver based variation, not the typical gold.
