possibly eggbound.. EDIT : didn't make it.

PS keep the room she's in dark to supress further egg laying - a top tip I got from someone!

no straining at all. which is what has made me wonder if she is egg bound at all. The horrid breathe made me thing sour crop in addition or instead of, and I'm still not sure about egg bound.

she is still quiet and droopy , has been sleeping in her cage in the kitchen. I ran out for apple cider vinegar to try to treat for sour crop. I'm hoping what ever it is all this attention and effort helps in some way.

thank you for your concern. we have a family party to go to this evening, and I'm anxious about not being here to keep an eye on her..

Oh yes, the kitchen is not dark, but I have dark towels around the cage, dark enough that if I peek into a corner I cannot see her since she is black. (its the only way to make darkness, every room in our house has big windows. there is no darkness or closets.

grace didn't make it.

I'm not by any means happy, but worse I'm worried how one of the kids will react when he realizes its the chicken he named.. there by making it his.

rats

and the ground is still too frozen to dig a hole.

Thank You for the support and sympathy. Now I'm just hoping it was not something completely different then suspected and contagious.

I'm really sorry to hear Grace didn't make it

I hope now a few days have passed, your youngster is ok with the loss.

Good luck with the rest of your family flock. I suppose the "good" thing (for want of a better word) with an animal being unwell is that it motivates you to look into what it could be and you learn so much at the same time. I know it's of little consolation when you lose an animal, but it will hopefully give you courage with future incidents.
