post any and all waterfowl pictures here!!! ponds, pools, aviarys, coops, runs, etc.

Made a small pond for the ducks this morning. Luckily we have sand for soil so it was really easy to dig out by hand. I think they like it :) It's about 7 foot x 7 foot and 2 feet deep. I didnt measure so I'm guessing.

Did you use a liner? if not and might want to put something around the top because the way they like to muck up they'll probably have it filled in in no time. I'd love to do something like that for mine but living in the mountains all we have is rock so I'd have to use alot of dynamite[ not a good idea] They sure look like they are enjoying it..

Yes their is a liner. It's a 10 ft pool liner, we had the pool up last year and it was a pain so now it became a pond lol. I will drain it and refill every now and again, I will use the pool pump without the filter its works really fast. Thats how I use to empty the pool when we used it.

I notice you haven't lined the pond with anything? I have heavy clay soil, but I also know when we get hot summers the ground bakes and cracks and no way would water stay in that sort of pond without a liner. How do you manage that? Do you keep topping it up with a hose?
BTW, it looks fabulous!

Hi Mum,

No, we haven't lined it. It's staying up pretty good for now, but I warned hubby that my long term plan is to concrete line it. I want to trench a drain line at the bottom depth and put in a pretty large diameter pvc pipe with enough slope for it to gravity drain down below, where I can irrigate some grape vines or some such plants. And hose it out a couple times a year.

There is a 50 gallon dipping tub (a small rubbermaid tub that's just big enough to make a mess) that's in their pen, and it is being drained into this pond each time I refill it. So it's getting some topping off from that. I planted a willow in the spillway out, and a couple of maiden grasses in the spillway in. He "dug" the pond in the middle of a natural low place that runs through the area, so I have hope that the watershed will refresh it some.

I am SO enjoying sitting and watching them play in their little pond. One will dive, come up under another, scaring them all, which makes them all jump out of the pond and run "zoomies". Then they laugh at themselves and get back in. That is pure joy, right there.

My 3 ducklings should arrive either today or tomorrow. A Welsh Harlequin, a White Layer and a Buff Duck - I'm anxious for them to arrive. I haven't made their pond yet - it's still in the box - but that's one of the next projects.
