Awwww.....what a sweet baby!

Now that makes me excited for mine to hatch but we have a while yet to go!

There are 7 total new buff orpingtons now, but I am afraid one of them is not doing well. I really do not think he will make it. I helped them out too much (I know stupid, but I succumbed.) I think he is a bit too premature. But, I learned! Thankfully the others are doing well, they all think I am mama hen and want to snuggle up under my hand whenever I reach for them. It is too cute. I am delighted with them, although remorsefull that I helped them too much. A couple of them needed it I believe, but I did too much. I prolly should have waited one more day.

:aww Don't feel too bad Loco, just think of it as a learning experience....I did the same thing and it seems that every hatch I help less and less.
Congrats on your babies! Hope the one in question perks up and makes it.

Thank you for the encouragement! I really dont think he will, but who knows. He is perky but his yolk didnt get absorbed, so he is carrying it still. I left him in the incubator to see if he will heal and the yolk will fall off. I dunno.

This was the most incredible learning experience you could have. Wasn't it awesome! And look at all those beautiful, healthy chicks you have now. After my first one hatched, after about 8 hours it was panting...too hot for him inside the bator. So I did open the bator (super quickly) and took him out. But my other 2 hatched just fine...no problems. So I know how you feel about wanting to help them out. It's very hard not to when you feel they're in distress. You did the right thing in your heart, but now your mind is telling you differently. It's ok...you're a great mama hen!

Day 21 - loud peeping in the bator. Egg #10 already has a crack - yuhuuuuuu - I am so excited.

Did he survive? What kind of electrolytes? Gatorade?

yes it did survive, and I believe you can use like pedialyte. You can also get some vitamin/electrolyte powder from your feed store that is made for chickens. I just use the sugar water. You add 1 teaspoon of sugar to a quart of water. That gives them a little boost. It is good to do this for all of the chicks. I eventually just cut the remaining yolk off, so it wouldn't catch on something or be pecked by the others.
Here's a pic of the little girl, at about 1 week old. She is just as big and happy as the rest of them!

Sorry the pic is not so good, but she is the light gray one in the front! She did end up having spraddle leg, probably from being too weak, but I splinted her legs, and she got over it.

That is encouraging. This little guy has it bad. When he popped out of the egg, it looked like the whole yolk was still attached. Yea it is pretty big. So far he is strong, he is just lugging that thing around in the bator. I worry about infection, but all I can do is keep him hydrated and hope for the best. I will do the sugar water thing for sure. I just hope he closes up. It looks like the diameter of a pencil where it is attached.
