Hi all,

It's our first year raising chickens and we just lost one of our hens today, looking for some input on if I could have done anything better. I suspect it may have been from being egg bound but am not certain. She was around 8 months old had been laying nearly every day without issues for the last 2 months. This morning was like any other day, let them out fo the coop, collected eggs refilled food and water, laid out some scratch. She had not laid an egg yet(we did get one from her yesterday), When I left them she was acting normal. Cut to this afternoon she is in the corner of the pen just laying down and looking lethargic, still no egg. I pick her up, take her to the water - she drinks a little and sits back down, checked her vent it looked normal. I then go back inside to research what could be going on. Go back out not 10 min later and she had passed. I looked her over to try and figure out what had happened, no wounds, felt in her vent there was an egg close to coming out. The other thing I noticed was her crop felt very gritty. Anyway, I know loss is apart of the job, it just happened so fast I wonder if I could have done anything differently. Appreciate any input anyone has to offer, thanks and good vibes to all your flocks.

I’m sorry for your loss. I don’t have any expertise at knowing what might have killed your hen. I would probably keep her body cold in a cooler, wrapped in a clean trash bag, and call your state vet in the early morning to ask for a necropsy. You could drive it to the lab or ship it overnight. Where are you located? Here is a list of state vets to contact:
