I've gotten 3 shipments of chicks from different hatcheries. NEVER have I had them confirm...via phone, e-mail, or whatever...that my chicks were shipped. I have to call them to make sure they've shipped them.

In 1 instance they shipped them early...my PO sent them out with my mail carrier...SHE was intelligent enough to call the number on the box and tell me she had them so they didn't have to ride around in the truck all day.

EXACTLY!!!! In fact, if he did any of the above - all the more reason NOT to leave the box of chicks sitting on porch with three big dogs. If he knocked, and no one answered, there was no way of knowing if and when the people would return home and how long the chicks would have to sit in the box on the porch with the dogs.

He should have taken the chicks back with him and left a note.

The USPS does have certain procedures to follow when live animals are involved and leaving them outside, alone, isn't one of them.

If it was just me, I could have slept through it. But my husband is a light sleeper and my little inside dog is too. He would have heard and so would my dog.

Believe me, I am blaming myself for everything that I did wrong! This is my second batch of chicks. The first time, the postal carrier called me so I assumed that was protocol. If the first postal worker hadn't have been so wonderful, I would have been more aware!

Normally we are up between 7:30 or 8:30 in the summer and my husband often much earlier. But we slept late this morning. Me because of my headache keeping me up all night and I guess my husband because my tossing and turning kept him up!

The phone number was right on the packing slip. It was just a combination of errors that came together to make this happen. If just one thing had been different...

the postal carrier coming later
me calling the post office
a different postal carrier
us getting up at our normal time
the gate being closed as it usually is (they would have left a yellow slip in our mailbox then probably)

Life goes on and we learn from our mistakes.

Also... I am not necessarily AFTER my postal guy. I posted some rude things about him originally because I was really upset. I would like an apology and something that shows me that they have learned something here and will never do it again. I want my post office to have a policy and a protocol that they follow from now on.

I have learned something. I will be at the post office at 6 am next time so that I can be there to get them.

They need to see the chicks in the box like it is. They need to feel the same disgust as we do about the whole thing!
It's one thing to tell them, but it's another to physically see the aftermath!!!
They need to get the whole picture up close and personal!

As to the previous poster about defending the post office............
If this were an extremely rare incident that's another story. We as chickeners are not the only ones who have this happen. For heavens sake we here in the good old USA are suppose to be a large networking family that help each other. It's the selfish few that are breaking down the network that keeps us bonded.

Well, What happened to the days where people enjoyed doing their job. They were proud of the job they were at and took a sense of pride in doing everything for that job and the people they serviced. When you have a job it becomes part of your life and it makes who you are and tells about who you are. And not reading anything on a package you are delivering when you most likely can hear peeping (obviously) is negligent. You then tell us about yourself and the way you live when you choose to look the other way and think and let things just get solved on their own.
On another note, I am very sorry for your chickies and what happened to them. Hopefully, you last remaining chick will survive.....post(office) traumatic stress syndrome. Just spoil the heck out of your chick!

Most hatcheries do not send an email conformation when they are shipped. They will send you an email if your shipment has been delayed, but not if it's on time or early. The hatcheries I spoke to told me they have to ship live chicks thru the USPS express mail only. You can not get a conformation signature for express mail.
The USPS is supposed to call the recipient upon arrival of the box of live chicks. They are not supposed to just leave them on a doorstep. The instructions and a contact number are clearly stated on the box. This is also the USPS policy for shipping live animals.
As for being human, it does not take much common sense to figure out they have a box of live peeping chicks with clearly written instructions on them. Most human beings with half a brain would not leave a box of LIVE animals on someone's porch without contacting a human being who lives at the house.
As for leaving a box of live peeping chicks on a porch with dogs on it....that falls under one of two categories...The person is just uncaring and a jerk. The other category....He didn't know USPS procedure of shipment of live animals, and wasn't able to read.

I am very sorry for your loss, and I do hope an acceptable resolution comes of this for you guys.

That's what was supposed to happen. The post office never called, though.

Wow - what a thread! First, I am so sorry that happend with your chicks. Second, I am another one that believes that it's the PO's fault. Many people have already posted the rules, etc. right from the USPS website so I won't even go there. I hope they will reimburse you.

All express mail must be signed for, unless the shipper signs a form on the shipping label that says "waiver of signature".

Were the chicks shipped express or priority?

This is very unfortunate and the USPS as a whole is not to blame, they usually do wonderful work. I can't believe that they can get a bird from here in Washington State all the way to Florida or Maine overnight. It's simply amazing.

But, there are bad apples out there spoiling everything and you got to pluck them out........

The lone chick is standing up in the bator and I am going to put him in the brooder soon. I have another brooder with chicks that are about a week ot so old. I am thinking of putting some of the smaller chicks with this one so she won't be alone. Do you think that would work?
