I have never ordered live chicks via postal service. After reading the nightmare stories on this site, I never will.

I'm so sorry for your loss and for the little vulnerable chicks that lost their lives.

I'm so sorry about your new chicks. You have to outsmart the post office people. When I ordered chicks for the first time, I called the post office and asked them 'WHEN' is the earliest possible time their truck could come in - they told me 6:00 a.m. I called them the day before the estimated delivery and told them I would be at the post office at 6:00 a.m. and I was there at 6:00. The minute I heard the truck drive up I listened intently and heard little chirping. So, I knocked on the window and told them I was here to pick up my little chicks and I could hear them peeping. They opened the door to the mailroom and handed them to me. I did the same thing when I ordered my Silkies from 2 different places. You can't trust the post office people to be concerned for your chicks...they just deliver and if nobody is there, they do what they are REQUIRED to do, and no more. At least, that's my experience, although I'm sure many DO actually care about the welfare of the chicks. My X was a postal employee and he did everything 'by the rules' or risked losing his job...hated it - said it was like a military operation, but with that large of a volume of mail...I can see why.

Every time I have ever gotten chicks it says right on the lable and this is from every hatchery I have ever bought from. "call *** *** **** upon receipt" the hatchery places your phone number on the lable for the post office to call you at home. My Post office has never failed to call me to come and pick the chicks up. I don't leave them my number it is ON THE BOX of chicks. So Yes Your post office is to blame . and it makes me sick to think of those poor little babies. Yes I know dogs are dogs, but they should never have left the post office till you went to pick them up.

I work for the P.O and do not think it was okay. MOST would not.

(Matter of fact, most of us are the ones rolling our eyes and being irritated when we call to have someone come pick up birds and they say "Aw, just bring them when you bring my mail." b/c we KNOW how fragile these little things are.

And to the person that said they'll never order chicks b/c of the nightmares that you have read here, for every bad one, there are hundreds of good ones. I've gotten plenty of chick and adult bird shipments, as well as had them sent out by myself and never had an issue.

I too think the PO should be responsible......They should have been trained/told when they were hired to know how to handle live animals in the mail.

Anyone who is delivering a live animal box, I would think, would pay more attention to the boxing and then see the instructions....by the way IMO they should have to obey since this is their job to deliver things.

They ask you when you mail off if you want your boxes marked, etc....that means they are saying they will honor these labels and do as instructed and I think anyone would know not to leave a box of live animals on a porch (even if they honked or knocked and no one answered) even if there weren't any dogs around. Even if this particular PO worker has no clue about chicks/live birds or anything to the affect...they should have been following procedure and that means doing what the box/shipping instructions says to do....call.

IDK how easy it is to get a recovery from the PO but I would stay on it and at least be compensated for the lost chicks.

I do feel for this PO worker as well in case they are just totally 'ignorant' (and I don't mean ignorant in a derogatory way-just that they have no experience about them) to birds/live animals. I wouldn't meet them at the door next time raising sin but just politly tell them how upset I am and please please do not ever leave live animals at the door when no one answers again. They need to know that they shouldn't deliver live birds like this in the future though.

True, but it never hurts to call and give them a heads up to make it more personal and I think most hatcheries actually recommend that you do just that.

(Not blaming the OP for this at all, btw. Just responding to this.)

How dumb!!
Look at a box stating LIVE CHICKS look down and 3 DOGS back at LIVE CHICKS then back at DOGS..

To leave them on the porch or to call like it states
Hmm
Hard decision...

Its *almost* as complicated as rocket science!

....NOT!
